dfi-lp-nf4:i should have done that fan-mod much earlier (now running q

Recommended Posts

ok,

so i have the dfi-lp-ut and it comes with the known fan headers, and one fan header is the "FAN2" connector.

[the three - CPUFAN, NF4(chipset)FAN and FAN2 can be adjusted in the bios so they run slower/faster depending on temps]

I have this Enermax PSU WhisperII and it has a sensor-wire coming out which i had plugged in in FAN2 ever since.

This is totally USELESS since the wire/PSU fan only provides RPM reading and NO way of (by software) adjusting and throttling the PSU speed. (Although the PSU has a 'knob' where i can do that manually. Just "knowing" that my PSU fan spins eg. 2100 RPM isn't worth a penny.

THEN i had a front 80mm intake and back 80mm exhaust - both right on 12V molex which ALWAYS were running at full speed.

I dont know why it took me so long to realize...but today i did the Ghetto mod:

- unplugged the PSU-fan sensor wire from "FAN2".

- connected front and back 80mm fans together

- plug the two fans (now on one connector) to FAN2.

Now, in bios i can adjust when those two fans will kick in at 100% depending on the PWM chip temperature. (eg. over 44C etc.)

If i am idle the front/back fans spin down TOO (like the CPU fan did already) and i have a REALLY nice and silent machine now.

Great for overnight downloads with CnQ/rightmark on...CPU all running at low voltage and all the fans turned down in silence.

Once i game or benchmark all fans spin up at full speed of course.

Primitive mod i should've done much, much earlier :)

(I guess i was too busy tweaking or something :)

add: i COULD also use speedfan to get some more control since now the fron/back fans are on an adjustable FAN-header - but i always prefer BIOS/system since i had issues with speedfan. And so i dont need a 3rd party program for the fan control.

I was thinking about doing the the same thing... But didnt...

My case has two 120mm fans and I really dont know anything about them. The main concern is can that little fan header support TWO 120 fans? There are some threads here that do not recomend running bigger fans of the headers...

Specs of the mobo headers would be nice  (but I dont think we'll ever going to find/see them...).

What case fans do you have (didnt see it in the sig, or am I not looking carefully...)?

the only thing i had to do:

(header on mobo, see manual)

[ 3-----2---1 ]

sense pwr gnd

Then connect the fans to 2 (pwr, red) and 1 (gnd, blk).

"Sense" i dont need. I have generic front/back fans without a sensor.

ANd..just look at the specs of your fan...if the total Wattage is under 6.24 (or 0.52 A) you'll be fine.

I bought a fan controller at FRY's, so I just set 4 of my fans at a lower speed and tweak it in based on readings from MBM. So now I only have the cpu fan being controlled my the motherboard. I watched the temps under load and slowed my fans down until it started getting warm and then I bumped them up about 200 rpm.

Much quieter. Plus I am only using 1 power connector for 4 fans.
