memnoch7 Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 i cannot beleive some people are formatting once a month. I havent formatted for 2.5 years on my old computer and still running 24/7! The only program you will need is a good firewall. If you are carefull and know what services are running at all times, you may not even need a firewall. red930 Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 You haven't lived until you keep a fresh install of the OS on your rig. lol Most of us that format and install regularly are running new programs all the time. As you know, once you install a program on a Windows OS it's just about impossibile to remove all traces. Encountering the wrath of the overclocking gods has a habit of hosing up a perfectly good OS. There are a lot of reasons to keep a fresh OS install on a rig besides outside sources. i cannot beleive some people are formatting once a month. Guest Tmod Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 when i do uninstall programs, i edit the registry by hand after uninstalling. this isn't really necessary even but im anal retentive. Maybe that is the way some people are about tweaking their internet connection or system. Windows Registry Repair Pro Registry Workshop (Like AG I like to remove all traces of a uninstalled program) Zone Alarm w Anti Virus Tmod
helicopter201 Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 lol to each our own ag:) im sure when i get a little bit up in years, (no offence =D) it wont be such a big deal as it is now like you say. and shinobi, i seem to have contracted a nasty bit of mpaa p2p ware in my comp and peer guardian is going INSANE, and yes ive checked that its blocking and not allowing. as you said it doesnt block that many ips if i look closely its the same thing: Performance Systems International Inc ed2k blah blah blah (on the net it says its a fake edonkey server and i dont even have edonkey). the worst part is its ORIGINATING FROM MY IP ADDRESS so obviously somthing i dl'd has mpaa written all over it. its just blocking the same thing thousands of times a minute so im gonna have to find out the cause. thx for the info bro ^_^ edit: disturbing... as soon as i turn off bitcomet the performance systems international stops flooding peerguardian. and just when i was starting to like bitcomet... could be one of the torrents... or the program itself was laced with mpaa crap... disturbing
StephenC Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 I use the built-in desk clean and defrag tools. I also keep an eye on the run folder in the registry. Other then that. There is nothing like a format and a fresh install. Now at work, that's a different story. I use any and every tool I can find. Do a lot of good old fashion temp file/folder deletes. As well reg hacks. If all else fails...have the user back up what he wants to save to the public drive, and re-image. (also take away his admin rights if I can)
Smoken Joe Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 Perfet disk Kaza liete kodec pack PG2 VLC FF I hardly ever need to sweep for malware after switching to fireox. No I am not safe but it is far easer to keep things cleen. As long as there is not too much junk on the drive I can get away with an old Tbird or duron and not notice it but once the junk starts to build up noting can keep away the lag. Talking about formating the drive..... at work they often simply replace the computer before cleaning out a drive. They got the volume discount though. Angel.O.Y.S Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 Well I just stopped using Firefox about a month ago on a recommendation from a friend and I now use Opera I am now 100% used to it and the tabbed browsing and mouse gestures and even voice control.were the main decisions. I have to say that I stopped using firefox as I would leave it on for hours at a time and it must have some sort of memory leak, I would have a sluggish system if say I left it on over night, but I do not get the same issue with Opera. It's got flashy bits just like firefox... Hark! I sound like quite the salesman but I run. Diskkeeper (Every drive - Every Night) Microshite anti-spyware Beta AAW SE PC Cillin Internet Security Suite 2005 (all drives - every night) And I am behind my netgear hardware firewall Tight ship here. Cythrawl Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Damn... I cant believe just how many people are obviously using P2P software on a regular basis on here. Its obvious just by looking at people running Peerguardian thats true. Look folks we all know why people are using P2P and Peerguardian and thats for the downloading of illegal Music/software/apps/etc otherwise you would not need it (Peerguardian) if you were downloading legal files... Im not saying im squeeky clean, because I'm not. But using ANY P2P software Peeguardian or not on a regular basis is like playing russian rioulette imo. The concept on how Peerguardian works is by people getting cease and desist's and report the ip's to the database. So you could be the next one that the RIAA et all targets on a new set of IP's they have just purchased/owned/regged. [Comment removed to conform with Fourm Rules - Sorry guys I really wasnt thinking and I respect the rules... sorry again] Stop using it people... Now on topic: Software I use Diskeeper Pro (Perfect disk 6 and 7 have major issues doing an offline defrag on the boot drive Esp on a RAID Array... its NEVER been fixed it just reboots and does not do a defrag. Tried it on like 7 different PC's now, AMD and Intel) Spybot Search and Destroy V1.4 Adaware Personal Ed. Maxthon for browsing. (better than Firefox IMO and works with windows update UNLIKE Firefox and Opera) Thunderbird for Email Tweaknow Powerpack Professional for reg cleaning, etc Symantec AV Corp V10 Serv-U FTP Server for my FTP server (Private access only with SSL and on a non standard FTP Port) Plus Im also behind a SPI Hardware firewall (no zone alarm eating resources here!) never EVER been hacked in the year that I have been running it either. helicopter201 Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Interesting way of putting it Cythrawl. Since you know so much about illegal downloading why dont you share your secrets as to "using full connection speed?" Im guessing you use IRC and or newsgroups. Anyone can get 400kb/s on irc if you know where to go. If not enlighten the rest of us to your "uber 1337 downloading skillz." Another thing ... peerguardian does NOT only protect you from the govenment/mpaa/riaa, if you took time to read the ip blocks its NOT only p2p/government its spyware and ads putting crap on your computer. Better to have many small layers of security than one big hardware firewall (anyone who has a router has a hardware firewall) and put all trust in it. Not everyone who uses PG2 dl's illegally. One last thing ... dont even compare Kazaa/Morpheous/Limewire/Edonkey to Bittorrent, as its not even close to the same thing. flame signing off
