A64 3000+ with stock heatsink and Arctic Silver 5 = glued together

Hi!

I tried to take off the heatsink from my new 3000+ Venice, but it wouldn't budge. I tried to wiggle it left and right, but nothing.

Then I just tried to lift it on the edges and voila, my heatsink was off, together with my CPU. I was so shocked I didn't even make a photo.

Luckily none of the pins were damaged. Has someone had the same experience? How is it possible that I could rip the CPU out of the socket without even lifting the handle???

I am quoting the official AS instructions:

Caution:

Arctic Silver is a grease and does not have any adhesive qualities. It will never dry or set and cannot be used to glue a heatsink to a chip.

I am taking the CPU to a friend for some testing (which is the reason why I took it out) and will post in the evening if the CPU and the Board survived the procedure.

Keeping my fingers crossed. :eek2:

Refards, Partizan

P.S. Do not try this at home!!!

Basically what the ZIF socket is, it let's you drop the CPU on top of the socket, then when you move the latch, it slides the socket down into the holes, making contact.

If you wanna get those two apart, stick em in a plastic baggie and put em in the freezer. Wait...wait...wait....Good.

Yes, it's because it pretty much creates a suction between the two surfaces.

It always happens when I take the waterblock off my P4. I've bent pins doing it when I was using the stock P4 cooler (that clip is shithouse) but if you're careful when taking it off you'll have no probs.

There just isn't enough force on the pins to keep the CPU in its socket in these kinds of situations.

Yes, I did it quite a few times too with either AS5 and stock pad.

Yeah I heard about it a couple of times from other peeps. One bloke bent a lot of pins on his CPU. With some careful tweezer work he got it going again!:)

Next time if it doesn't look like its coming off try some TIM cleaner on an ear-bud - usually does the trick ;)

the trick which i use to get them off after facing this problem si that i enter the Bios and go to the health screen , stop the Stock H/S's fan with my hand and watch the temp till it get near 55 i shutdown the computer using the power switch on the PSU and quickly remove the H/S, it will come out easily using this trick but be sure to watch the cpu temp cause u don't want it to go mroe than 60C

  • 1 month later...

LOL...that happens all day long with my intel setup (478). And it makes that horrible sound when the pins come out..like metal on metal scraping. Anyway...taken it out like 50 times and no damage.....prolly why they went to lga.

Yep, common problem, it happened to my as well. There are 2 easy ways round the problem. You can either warm it up with a hairdryer for easy removal or take the plastic sink retention mechanism off, to allow you to rotate the heatsink until it comes off. :)
