lanntair Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Okay, just finished my first build and ran into some issues, namely, getting the IRQL NOT LESS THAN and PFN LIST BSODs at various points throughout the Windows XP Pro installation process. Ran Memtest on the RAM and generated lots of errors in dual channel mode, none in single channel mode on either stick. Bumped DRAM voltage to 2.9V and this solved that problem but still got PFN LIST error while copying XP Pro setup files. I eventually solved this problem and succeeded with XP Pro installation by disabling External Cache, as recommended by several posts and others. Now that Windows is up and running , I have two questions: what exactly does the external cache do, and how big of a performance hit am I probably taking to leave it disabled? I've tried reenabling External Cache, and Windows randomly restarts. I'd appreciate any advice for getting things up to 100%. Thanks much, Lanntair

You're probably taking a performance hit if External Cache is disabled. You probably won't notice much difference in performance, but it might perk things up enough you'll see it, depends on the system and how much cache is built into your CPU. Juic3 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Yikes, why is this problem not being solved, Im having the exact same problem, and some others too. The reason I got this rig was to play WOW, will I take a big performance hit by having External Cache disabled ??
Juic3 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Well I managed to fix this thanks to Rydez from OCZ, he told me try some options in the DRAM and Genie BIOS settings and BIOS 618-2 WITH External Cache ENABLED. Windows is working, and Im about to do some benchmarking.
