Rezag1000 Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I know different BIOS affect RAM a lot, but how about the CPU? Is it possible my crappy venice @ 2300 mhz could get 2.4 to 2.5 with a different BIOS? Or do BIOS only cause small differences? thanks
pershoot Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 possibly. flash around and test for yourself on your specific parts:)
Guest Kronos Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 possibly. flash around and test for yourself on your specific parts:) I would like to confirm what Pershoot said. The biggest limiter will be your chip since all chips are not equal when it comes to OC'ing. Your best bet would be to grab a few BIOS's and start testing. I personally have gotten better OCs from new BIOSs.
oliveryochest Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 mine clocks better with 510-1. so i would have to agree with pershoot. it is possible
Rezag1000 Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 cool, I will try anything to help my Venice, sorry for posting in the wrong section
Smallies Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I know it sounds crazy but try raising your RAM voltage... i did this the other day and i OC'd well up to 2.7ghz - before changing ram voltage, icouldn't even do 2.2ghz. My ram has been at 200mhz FSB at both voltages as well, so even though the extra voltage should make ZERO difference, apparently it does. Really odd as the memory timings I used at 1.8ghz and 2.6ghz (current speed) are identical... and I used a divider to keep it at 200mhz fsb btw my ram is at 3.0v right now. Rezag1000 Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 lol, is it possible the extra memory voltage helped out the onboard controller?
jtc_hunter Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 All setups are different. Nobody can really tell you what the best bios for you will be. You just have to try. For example: I have tried around 10-12 different bios and the Official 310's are by far the best for me, and another odd thing is that my memory gives me it best performance at 2.6v. NEOAethyr Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 I would have to says yes, to some extent anyways for now. For any board. If you see others with a dfi bios get higher then you, then stick with the dfi, if you're trying to get higher then any dfi bios you've sen peopel running then try a modified one. I would not try a modified bios until I got to the point where I need to get past where most everyone else is clocked at. Then again alot of people just use them anyways, I mean no offence when I say this but, for example the nf2, a person will get and use a modified bios to try getting a fsb past say 220fsb or 200 or whatever. It's kinda funny, and sad too lmao. Like I said I mean no offence, it's just that about any dfi bios can do much better then that and it's not the bios they should worry about... Whatever though heh ^^ . Using diffrent dfi bios ver's to find the one you like, I can agree with that one . Using a modified ver of someone's to get past some poor oc that the maority of higher clocked users are allready past when they use a dfi bios, I don't agree to use one of those bios'es then. That's just me. To use a self modified bios for defaults or other misc changes, go for it all the way . Using a modified bios, not to gain more oc headroom, but for a diffrent purpose, like stated above, or to gain bandwith or a new sata rom, or some misc fix, go for it(if you're prepared for possible problems just in case). Diffrent bios vers and modified ones can get you more cpu speed too. Normally it's all about the fsb, but sometimes you can get a lower stable voltage for the cpu, stuff like that. Find what dfi bios you like 1st, then if you want to, try a modified ver. That's my advice.
Tecnolover Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 Its a hard question to answer. I started with my factory bios and didn't have much luck although i was new at overclocking and lacked experience and then i flashed to 310, and then to 510-2. Each seemed a bit better but it could have been that I was getting more used to the board and the chip and my oc'ing skills were getting better. However, i do like the ability to use both yellow and orange dram slots with the 510 flash. although I can't say I've noticed any significant difference between the slots. Each adds something extra to the tweakability of things, particulary the ram. I really love bios 310-510 how they include memtest in the bios. I don't think the bios that shipped with my ultra-d had that. Very nice addition and convenient too! I can burn and test ram over long periods without even having my DVD rom or HD running.
