Set Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I'd like to ask about the PSU requirements. Before you groan and link me to the search function, I'll tell you that I have read the "480W, 24-pin" requirement sticky. I understand this, but I am still wielding a 420W, 20->24 adapted PSU. Again, I understand that this does not meet the requirements. However, in my experience, the requirements often have a bit of leeway. I will be unable to purchase a 500W PSU for another month or so, so I'm very interested in how far I can get with the sub-par PSU. I am not planning to overclock (yet) and am using only a single video card (allbeit one of the most power-intensive ones around). Can I slide? If not, what symptoms will the computer show? davidhammock200 Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 +3.3V@30A;+5V@40A;[email protected];+12V@18A;[email protected];+5VSB@2AI would be supprized if you have a 6800GT/U, as you just don't have the +12V amperage. If you attempt to power your RAM using the +5V jumper, it will probably harm something. Your VC is not going to perform at its peak, as it is power starved & completely forget ANY OC'ing. You may/will have all manor of wierd/intermittent problems. Best possible advice besides "get a recommended PSU" is to keep that PSU as cool as possible. m3talma5ter Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I had a 520w psu witha 20 pin connector before i bought my modstream, honestly, if i did not overclock it ran fine for most usages, but if ur doing some serious gaming like maybe a 16 player hl2 deathmatch game, it has tendencies to crash. i was having quite a few crashes running on stock with that psu in games like doom3 and deathmatch... Ever since i upgraded to the new modstream it doesnt crash. i got away with running the 20 pin for like 2 months with the penalties of crashing in INTENSE games. Also though when i did upgrade psu, I noticed a huge difference in performance in games, ran a lot smoother.

You don't want to just "slide" w/ this board. Do it right and get a decent psu. If you can't afford it, then get the nf3
Sharp Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Hello, Restarts, crashes. Heat, smoke, fire, sound when it blows up. Then the feeling that you get when you discover that the PSU made a meal of the board/CPU/MEM/GFX.
bread Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I remember running the 1Ghz athlons when they first came out with what we thought was a good psu. Then running these machines during late night gaming sessions and hearing the loud pops watching the sparks shoot out the back of the psu letting us know we had a good quality psu. But back to the matter, it's your components and you've been warned. Set Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I can't tell which of the comments are joking and which are not. Will I or will I not survive with the PSU and no OCing? (I am purchasing one of the recommended ones, but not yet. This is about the meantime.)

(I am purchasing one of the recommended ones, but not yet. This is about the meantime.) If you DO NOT use the +5V to power the RAM & keep the PSU very cool, it "might" survive, but get that new PSU ASAP! :dog: What are your system specs?
Sharp Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Hello, Sorry if I confused you but you asked for the "symptoms".
Shinobi Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Personally i think i'd just hang for a month and use your old system(i'm assuming you have one?). I've seen/suffered the aftermath of a blown PSU and believe me it wasn't pretty. I lost almost everything(motherboard, harddrive, cpu as well as the PSU...). And that was because i couldn't wait a month till i got my new PSU... When you take that thought/possibility into consideration doesn't having to do without your new system for a month sound all that bad compared to what you could be risking? If you do plan to take the risk just make sure you take heed of Daves advice...
Set Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I was actually thinking of waiting a mere week, but from what you guys are saying, it's not worth the (minor?) risk. I'll just wait for Mr. Flower. System specifications: 64 3200+ Venice OCZ Value BH-5 512MBx2 (PC3200) DFI NF4 Ultra-D eVGA 6800GT said PSU Cooler Master Cavalier T-03 (case) EDIT: While I'm at it, what are the two 4-pin power in slots on the motherboard? (one is 2x2, one is 4x1.)
