Frallan Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 I just wanted to type this up for ppl who have strange issues now and then especially rendom lockups and strange errors. I installed my XP (Pro-SP2-media player removed tweaked version) when building the computer and it was Prim Stable and Memtest stable but sometime when doing nothin or just starting an app (or playing HoI2) it would just lock up. So I ve tried repairs and a co9uple of times and reinstalled drivers (and cleaned drivers up) and re-installed apps. Well yesterday I took all my newly aquired DFI knowledg on what to have enabled and what to not have enabled in bBIOS and formated my HD. I then installed a narrow set of drivers avoiding the traps known to me (such as nVidia IDE). Result: A lot of lost Data (incl DOOM3 save games) and a faster more stable (so far) system. So the summary is that some of the issues that we're struggeling with on this forum can't be resolve by tweaking timings and voltages but has to do with software and that a Format C: sometimes is the right answer even tho it hurts. Just a remider to everyone (like me) that thinks the answer lies in a new PSU or new RAM.
dysonlu Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 What those "traps"?
hdtvrocks Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 I'm having randon BSOD's as well. What's this regarding Nvidia IDE drivers? Angry_games mentioned it in another thread but can't seem to find any details.
ccone Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 Some people (ok... quite a few folks) have reported BSOD's, lockups, and corrupted hard drives after installing the nVidia IDE drivers that are distributed with their chipset driver packages. The current recommendation (at least by the gurus here) is to ensure that teh device is configured in windows to use the Microsoft IDE drivers as they work and have not caused the same problems. That being said, I installed/configured my rig after reading all this and thought I made sure not to install the nVidia IDE drivers with the rest of the chipset drivers. Checking my device manger now, I see that I am using the nVidia drivers. Dunno how they got in there, unless that is a result of using the F6 during initial installation to select the drivers from the floppy. I may be pushin my luck, but I have had absolutely no issues with my setup. (we need an emoticon for fingers crossed) So the question becomes... if I'm workin, should I change the driver over to the MS ones? hdtvrocks Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I actually just uninstalled the Nvidia IDE drivers. I'll report if it makes a difference. My reboot usually happens when I remote desktop in. prime95 will run stable for hours.
