Failing Windows - Memory?

Hi,

I hope I have all the detail required in the sig, but apologies if I have missed anything. Although I have built PCs before, this is the first 'big' problem I have had, and I am hoping that you will have the patience to help. It all seems to be based around having memory in slot 4, but I have listed actions etc to try to make it clear. No other BIOS changes (apart from boot order) have been made from the shipping version unless listed specifically.

- Built system as per spec in sig (apart from std shipping BIOS)

- Could not install Windows without BSOD, usually at the point when clicking Enter to actaully begin the install

- Removed one RAM stick from slot 4, installed and launched Windows fine with one stick in slot 2. (By the way, this was repeated with each memory stick installed in slot 2 in turn to check for a RAM error)

- Tried to boot into Windows with both slots 2 and 4 filled; never got past (Windows) splash screen

- Flashed to 310 bios from DFI website

- Tried to boot into Windows with both slots 2 and 4 filled; never got past (Windows) splash screen

- Plugged molex connector into mobo, and booted ok.

- Second boot got to just past Windows loading screen, then rebooted. Rebooting cycle repeated.

- Flashed to 510 bios

- No change in results

- Changed CPC to disabled (2T), and so far been able to start windows, but about to test further

So the two actions that have have a semi-positive result are plugging in the molex and changing to 2T. Does this sound right - or is it more likely just a coincidence? Should I have to go to 2T for this memory, or is there something wrong here?

Any pointers as to how to get the most out of my system would be most appreciated. I am not looking to overclock at the moment, but rather get a stable system up and running first!

Once again, thanks for any help, and my apologies if I have omitted any obvious information required.

What kind (part#) of Geil RAM do you have? What are your voltages? and what are your timings? You should always be able to run 1T unless you have 1GB in each slot or more than 2 slots full as in 4 x 512MB, or 1024MB. Make sure ALL of the plug-ins are plugged into the board!!

well from his sig i can see he has 2x1GB so that wd suggest 1T was part of the problem.

coyote from your findings wouldnt the obvious thing to do be to try and reinstall windows with just slot 2. you say you had luck with disabling 1T (maybe your OS was already corrupted by now) and now you should be able to install again.

regards

Davis - you hit the nail on the head, and that is what I did. I installed xp with only slot 1 used, and then installed the second stick.

Freezer26 - I have got 1GB in each slot, and so would this cause a problem with a 1T setting? (Forgive my ignorance on this, it is my first time into memory in detail!) The other details for the RAM are CL=3-8-4-4, and I have not changed the voltages from stock, so would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks for the help.

No no man, forgive mine, didn't see it, actually thought I did see it, but thought it said 2 x 512, my bad. Yeah definately try what Davos suggested. I'm an idiot. :)

Also would try (not sure on 1GB sticks) to up the VDIMM to say 2.7 or 2.8 run memtest on each change, once you get through with 0 errors then I'd say your good. Check out the sticky at the top of this forum, there are some BIOS setings, or just look in Angry_Games sig.

Coyote try disabling Command Per Clock in the DRAM Config section for your 2x1024MB modules

the Venice/San Diego core was supposed to overcome the winchester/newcastle limitations of 4x dimms or 1024MB modules only being able to run @ 2T (integrated memory controller is the fault)

but I have not seen any conclusive proof that users are easily able to do 4x512 or 2x1024 etc @ 1T

Angry_Games - since amending the CPC to Disabled (2T right ?!) I seem to be running OK. It would therefore appear that there is a problem with using 1GB sticks and Venice - although that is not based on a lot of data (i.e. me!).

To all; thanks for all the help. Without the posts here I would have been convinced that the mobo was at fault!

maybe try going 1T (with a voltage increse possibly) and if it doesnt work then maybe this new mem controlelr isnt as good as its cracekd up to be.
