Drive Strengths & Skew Rates Continued

Recommended Posts

Just been running some more tests with Drive Strengths and Skew Rates on my system. Well as i said the other day i can now run this CADT Ram with CPC Enabled with a mild overclock, something i couldn't do even underclocked when i first got it, i think the Ram has finally burned in :)

So, i thought i'd try tweaking the DS & SR's a bit more to see if i could get it that little bit better. I was previously running it 6/7,6/7,6/7 which gave me some decent results.

I started by dropping my FSB to 215mhz and enabling CPC so i knew i'd get a good few errors on Test #5. Anyway, i started the test with DS & SR's on AUTO and launched Memtest. With each pass i got roughly around 2000 errors.

Not happy with this i thought i'd next try it on the settings i normally used, DS/SW 6/7,6/7,6/7 and instantly the amount of errors dropped to around 800, a nice improvement :)

For the next test i thought i'd try upping it a bit so set it to DS/SW 7/8,7/8,7/8. Errors increased to about 1100, not as bad as it was on Auto but not as good with the previous setting either...

For the last test i thought i'd try dropping them a little to DS/SW 5/6,5/6,5/6. Now this is where i saw the biggest improvement. I ran about a total of 15 different passes on this setting with 3 different runs and i never saw it get higher than 600, some runs as little as 400 but averaging out at about 500 errors.

So, just experimenting with the Drive Strengths and Skew Rates i managed to increase stability and drop the amount of errors i recieved by around 1500 from the default/auto settings which i don't think is bad at all really :)

i was messing with ds/sr the other day.... having heard that tccd likes weaker drive strengths i tried it with ds at 5, then 4 and finally 3 but errors were becoming more frequent the lower i got.

i tried these again whilst lowering SR aswel but still had errors within the first few passes of test#5

so i then tried DS/SR of 6/7 for each dimm and only got 14 errors in 325 passes, 7 1/2 hours....

thought this was pretty good as first errors came up after 92 passes and no errors after 200 passes.

next day tho it would error after around 18 passes, down to 6/6 and all seemed good again for around 90 passes. still tweaking

btw just fitted my new si-97 with 92mm panaflo, 7c drop in cpu temp straight away, arctic silver will hopefully bed in a bit....... (idle 34, primed for only 10mins on large and it reached 37c. very impressed and its SOOOO much quieter, chipset temp has also dropped about 5c.

very happy, cheers for the advice shinobi and playah

Sounds like your seeing some improvements :)

Its not a miracle worker but it definitely helps some when you hit that perfect configuration, but it takes time and lots of tweaking.

Ah so you got the SI-97 then. Thats quite a drop you got with it there, plus the surrounding components will be benefitting from that extra cooling too.
