Complete noob problems

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I recently invested in a dfi sli dr and while building the comp (it was my first time ever) I knew I was doing something wrong. I boot it up and find 4 red lights to the bottom left of the motherboard. I think it means fatal error or something and would like some help. My main question is the power supply, I have a powerstream 520w and i didn't know what connectors to connect to the mobo. So I only connected the main 24 pin one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

what does it mean by

Connect power supply to motherboard – be sure to make all four connections. (A minimal install outside the case is optional. You may wish to jump to Step 10).

What four connections does he mean?

See page 16 of the manual here: http://www.dfi.com.tw/Upload/Manual/lputnf4%20847305083.pdf

In addition to the ATX and the 12v, there's a FDD type connector and HDD type connector. I initially didn't plug into these, and board wouldn't boot. So I have my power supply plugged into both of these with the Floppy Drive and and Hard Drive each on the same cable:

Power Supply >> Floppy Drive + Board's FDD connector

Power Supply >> Hard Drive + Board's HDD connector.

Not sure I did it right, but it works (mostly) :O

Lev.

Have you actually looked at the manual yet. The printed instructions cover all of these things. You can also download the current manual in PDF format from the DFI site.

If you are getting just one LED now, then you are making progress. The only thing that needs to happen is for the board to POST/boot up.

Do you have a monitor hooked up? Are you getting any signal? Usually the Lanparty splash screen shows up about the time you get one LED, and you can get into the bios by pressing delete and then load the optimized defaults.

If that isn't happening, then double check the connection between the video card and monitor. If that still doesn't work, then there could be a problem with the VX ram you are using. Even though it's detected, if the bios settings aren't right, the ram can prevent the computer from booting. Although I think you should still be getting a splash screen that might freeze up. I think the VX ram requires more juice, so that could be an issue. You may want to try to install just one stick, or first try to boot with other ram if you have it handy.

tongtong, if you want help, you need to help yourself by putting your parts in your signature.

If you are getting 4 LEDs, the problem is one of these: 1) power supply; 2) cpu; or 3)motherboard.

Assume it is user error and you have something hooked up incorrectly, as base did up above.

Do you have a 24 pin power supply?

Take everything out of your case and do a minimal install. Double check all connections, and reseat your CPU.

If that doesn't work, then either the power supply, cpu, or motherboard are defective.
