jwill Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 to start off ive searched around for a bit but didnt find anything exactly like my situation. i have read a few cold boot problem threads. one about a 6800gt needing to be reseated. tried that a few times with no success. unpluged everthing except what the board needs to boot with. tried booting with only one dimm installed. nothing successful so far. to begin... so i had my system at 280x10 at i believe 1.20 x 136% which was pretty stable (ran prime95 small fft test for and hour then stopped the test). i remember cpu-z displaying 1.586 and noticing it was about .03 below my selected cpu voltage. i used (cf)Eclipse's a64 oc guide from hardforum to find out the limits of my components. board topped out at 310htt, cpu at around 2900mhz and the ram at 290 (3-4-4-8 @ 2.9v). i decided to increase the voltage slightly to 1.525 x 110% which is 1.678 in the settings to see if i could run 290x10 with better stability (fails prime95 after 5 minutes). so i set and reboot... system powers up and shuts down right after. bummer... reset the cmos (switch off psu, unplug, hit the power button a few times, move clear cmos jumper, wait ten minutes, move back jumper, plug in, switch on) and it powers on and doesnt shut off immediately which is good but it doesnt boot. it just sits there with four leds lit up and doesnt power on the monitor. :/ im a little worried but optimistic that itll be able to boot with some advice. thanks in advance. RGone Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Courtesy of Ex_Roadie... Remove power from the system. Insert one ( 1 ) stick of memory in slot #2 (topmost Orange slot) Remove the battery. Move the CMOS jumper to clear. Move the speaker jumper to on position. Make sure you have a wired keyboard plugged into the PS2 port. Leave the CMOS jumper at clear for at least five minutes. Set the CMOS jumper back to normal Replace the battery Press and hold down the Insert Key on the keyboard. Apply power. Press the start button on the rig. When you hear the beep from the speaker. Release the Insert Key and press the Delete key. Post back the results. RGone...

THunDA Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 You can try this also.. Unplug your psu and press the power button a few times to discharge any power left in the system.. then move the cmos jumper to clear for 5 min's.. Insert ONE ram stick in slot 1.. move jumper back to normal.. Plug power back in .. Hold INSERT key and at the same time press the power on.. if it boots press delete and go right into bios and load optimized defaults.. You can also try the above with ONE stick in slot 2.. jwill Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 ^ any other ideas? thanks guys. edit: another issue lately is the video card would sometimes turn off it seemed right after power on. the card has at least one led that would be on when the computer is powered up but lately it would turn off after power up as well as the fan turning off. ive tried reseating the card which seemed to help but it happens every now and then on power up. (ive checked the power plug as well as trying the second power plug with the psu.)
jwill Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 tongtong, if you want help, you need to help yourself by putting your parts in your signature. If you are getting 4 LEDs, the problem is one of these: 1) power supply; 2) cpu; or 3)motherboard. Assume it is user error and you have something hooked up incorrectly, as base did up above. Do you have a 24 pin power supply? Take everything out of your case and do a minimal install. Double check all connections, and reseat your CPU. If that doesn't work, then either the power supply, cpu, or motherboard are defective. (from the 12th post from this thread... http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...4&highlight=led) from the posts above, it sounds like i just need to clear my cmos but would any of that quote do me good? i was thinking about taking everything out of the case and reinstalling/reseating. thanks again. edit: video card power issue seems to have gone away. it hasnt happened after i checked the gpu and nv5 contact. Franky Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 update... i bought a new board an sli-d this time. installed and booted up the same way (four led, no boot). so now im thinking its the cpu. although im not 100% sure. any thoughts? thanks. New board, no boot, could be the cpu. Check if it seated correctly in the socket. Have any other cpu to test in the board, or another board to test the cpu in? pershoot Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 sounds like your cpu may have gone bust. possibly your cooling wasnt sitting properly, and or couldnt maintain temps at 1.675.
jwill Posted June 6, 2005 Posted June 6, 2005 definitely seated correctly in the socket. would it be possible the cpu could shift after it booted fine? im thinking not with all the pressure keeping it put. unfortunetly nobody i know has a socket 939 board to test the chip in or another chip to test the rest of the system with. so im out of luck there. i pulled the heatsink off the chip and found about 3/4 compound covering the cpu. im thinking it must have been a heat issue then. >< doh! if so my most costly mistake ever. :/ thanks again guys for your input. ill give another update when i get a new chip.
