That's it!

That's the one!

It's DEP!

I've turned it off and I'm now in Win XPSP2 with 9 x 316!!!

 :shake:

Before, I could never get past 9 x 290 - 300!

Many, many thanks to Worthington for his suggestion about turning DEP off in the first place!

Many thanks to Shinobi for his continued ideas and 'encouragement' (come on Jimbo! ;))

OK, here's what I did (thanks to link from AAdjuster):

Edit Boot.ini so the switch:

/noexecute=OptIn

after the Windows OS selection reads:

/noexecute=AlwaysOff

(watch capitilization).

Hey presto!

Jimbo so you did all 12 steps

Disabling DEP system-wide using boot.ini

1. Click Start, and then click ControlPanel.

2. Under Pickacategory, click PerformanceandMaintenance.

3. Under or Pick a Control Panel icon, click System.

4. Click the Advanced tab, and in the Startup and Recovery area, click Settings.

5. In the SystemStartup area, click Edit.

6. In Notepad, click Edit and then click Find.

7. In the Findwhat field, type /noexecute and then click FindNext.

8. In the Find dialog box click Cancel.

9. Replace the policy_level (for example, "OptIn" default) with "AlwaysOff” (without the quotes).

WARNING: Be sure to enter the text carefully.

Note: Your boot.ini file switch should now read:

/noexecute=AlwaysOff

10. In Notepad, click File and then click Save.

11. Click OK to close StartupandRecovery.

12. Click OK to close SystemProperties and then restart your computer.

Hehe, sweet. So we got there in the end. Many thanks to Worthington bringing up Execute Bit :D As soon as he mentioned that it clicked  I knew it must be.

The question now is why its affecting some users and apparently not others? Hmmm...

Venice?

DFI NF4?

BIOSs? (Don't think it's this one).

It may affect some people, but they may not notice it. If they have ONLY used SP2 to clock their chip, they might think they have a poor chip which can only hit 2.6 Ghz.

This trick didn't give me one sigle Mhz. I hit the same wall as usual: 2650 with a CBBID 0450 3500+ Winchester.

It would be usefull to get feedback of whether this is a A64 issue or a Venice only.

@Jimbo Mahoney

I guess that the DEP feature use some parts of your CPU that don't overclock well, but that fortunately don't interfere with the use you give to you computer. Thus, this trick may not be usefull to many people. It would be nice to collect some more info about this DEP thing. I'm glad it worked for you

I reckon so too, and its definitely a possibility that this could just be a Venice issue. The other guys who have tried it and had no luck were using Winchesters and Newarks.

Suprise Suprise

Checked first post, Randall has a Venice :P And a 3000 at that ;)

We need more Venice guinea pigs :D
