Intel's Multiplier

my friend doesnt believe me when i say intel and amd lock the multiplier on their chips. amd can be unlocked, intel cannot. i have given him proof and he refuses to listen. please post your thoughts so i can give him this topic url and prove him wrong.

Well buddy, then your friend is an idiot.

 

Intel and AMD lock them so other companies can't overclock them and sell them as a higher CPU.

 

What other companies would do is, raise the multiplier to something higher, lets say a 2.4GHz with 533MHz FSB, then the company would raise the multiplier to whatever the 2.6GHz is maybe, then they would sell the cheaper 2.4GHz at the 2.6GHz price, therefor Intel would get screwed (w00t!!!) and the company that sells it would make more money.

 

That's why they lock them.
