crazybones Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 I should mention that the 3Dmark scores that I posted above were taken on a non overclocked system using older ATI Catalyst drivers (the ones supplied on the DFI disk), but they give a good indication of the relative performance differences between the slots. Using the 5.4 Catalyst drivers with the card in the second slot (8X), I'm now scoring 4856.
GooN3r Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 ... and after? Before changing, you'll be running at 2 PCI-E lanes for your graphics card. After, you'll get 8. Four times the bandwidth. I ran out of time last night, but will do it soon. As I only have my card in the lower slot I assume I only have to move the lower bank of jumpers to occupy the bottom two sets of pins? I can leave the upper bank as it is?

GooN3r Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 OK here are my scores before changing the jumpers 3dmark 05= 5040 3dmark 03= 11710 3dmark 01= 24132 Quick Update having moved the jumpers: 3dmark 05= 5116 3dmark 03= 12076 3dmark 01= 24876 nice increase
SaFrOuT Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 so does this mean that placing the VC in the first pci-e will run @ 16x placing it @ the second slot without changing the jumper will run it @ 2x and with changing the jumpers will run it @ 8x ??? so i think the bst solution will be the first slot only and does runing it @ 8x will decrease it perfromance than running it @ 16x ? placenta Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 man thats weird.. my card is in the "top/upper" slot. but ill be getting a 2nd vid card soon, i prob wont mess with it. ps.. since we're talking about 3dmark.. i just happened to run it last night. but i only have 3dmark03. http://sicily.globat.com/~markgeraghty.com.../benchmarks.jpg
timko Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Current PCI-E cards can NOT max out a 16x channel and so running it in the first slot at 16x or in the second slot at 8x makes no difference. In the future when cards can make use of the extra bandwidth afforded by 16x only then will you see a performance hit if you was to put the same card in the 2nd slot. So in summary for now 1st slot and 2nd slot (with jumpers moved) is no major performance loss
dopke Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Yep, move them all.http://img255.echo.cx/my.php?image=jumpers9yb.jpg What chipset heatsink is that? Did you change it because you found the chipset fan too loud?

exscape Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Yup, that's the one. I actually changed it before I even built the computer, since I read so much about loud chipsets fans, especially on the A8N-SLI. No fan of that size can be quiet enough to make me happy, so...
