MTSteel Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Power supply just went up in a loud, bright ball of arching mess!! Who knows what happened, i just heard alot of nasty electrical arcing while upstairs, wife said the light beside the PC went crazy while the PSU was burning itself up!! What a bloody mess!! That thing lasted a whole 2 months!!! Now I get to try and deal with replacing it, damn what a great Mothers Day/Birthday!! The positive side.... PC booted up with my old 350W Sparkle(15A on 12V). Thank GOD, I thought I had lost 6 weeks of digital photos of 19 month old son(yes, I know, I should back up more, just did not get around to it). Hope everything is OK when I start to stress it again when new PSU arrives(now to figure out how to get it replaced), just used the old Sparkle to see if it would boot. Vista Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Wow! I'd update your sig and backup your data ASAP! Was the computer plugged into a UPS or surge protector? That does seem bad, many people have had no problems with that PSU and your rig sig. Maybe you can get an RMA and upgrade to a 600w or something? Stop_Sign Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 600W is beyond overkill for what he's running. Just get another 485W, which is already a little overkill.

Yeah, I'd chalk it up to bad luck unless you have 8x HDD and 4x DVD/CDRW running too. Still, get a good sine-wave UPS if you don't already have one. The 600W recommendation is valid if you plan on keeping the PSU during your next upgrade cycle. Otherwise you can get a 480 to 520 PSU for the rig. MTSteel Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Just one 80 Gig IDE HDD This PSU was overkill for what I have, but that is OK, the one upgrade I was looking at down the road was a next gen mainstream video card. SO I figured a good PSU was a sound investment. Anyone know a contact # for Enermax?? Their website is one of the worst I have seen! Only phone number is in Tawain. Boy dont I wish I grabbed an OCZ now, at least I could have got some help here from the OCZ guys
cronocrash Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 I feel your pain brotha. A long time ago, I watched the PSU fan shoot green sparks at the wall, belch smoke. I wasn't that fortunate though. I lost everything. I've also had a monitor do the same thing. Hey if you still have it, and it's all scorched u should post some pics! =-p I got an OCZ Powerstream 520w and it's awesome. Guest Shibby Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 MTSteel, I just bought that PSU. I looked in their included literature and could only find contact info for Taiwan as well. Greg
MTSteel Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 Yeah, i guess I will just let the place I bought the PSU from deal with them. They told me to simply bring in the receipt, and the unit and they can take care of it, could be 2-4 weeks though! I wanted to contact Enermax myself and see if i could get a new one right away, since 6 weeks is a bloody joke for a high quality PSU to go up in smoke! Pics will be boring, seems all the damage was limited to the inside, no marks on the outside, but I did get some chunks fall out of the unit. cronocrash Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 @Shibby: Why would you need to contact Taiwan when AndyOCZ and RyderOCZ on this forum are OCZ employees? @MTSteek: Aww, well it was worth a shot.
Guest Shibby Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 cronocrash: Because he's got an Enermax PSU, not an OCZ
