muggie2 Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 I've been looking at getting a good p/s for the DFI Lanparty Ultra-D system that I intend to build in early September. Sadly, since I'm not in the US, most of the listed products are unavailable, and the ones that are are overpriced. I was looking at this power supply: http://www.shg.com.tw/front/bin/ptlist.phtml?Category=62768 It seems to cover the listed requirements, but I want to make sure before I buy it, rather than buying it and then trying to make the system work with inferior parts. Has anyone used them before and had good/bad things to say about them? Or, if there's something obvious that I'm missing, please let me know. I know I'm going to make some mistakes putting together my system. If you can see the mistakes before I make them, then tell me - I'd rather know *before* I do something stupid Muggie2

Are there no "RECOMMENDED" brands available?
muggie2 Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 I wouldn't recommend it, given its limited +12V amperage rating. Are there no "RECOMMENDED" brands available? Oh, some of them are there, they're just overpriced. Others aren't there. Seasonic - Not available at all PC Power&Cooling - not available at all. OCZ - Not available at all Zippy - Not available at all Coolermaster - Not available at all Fortron - Not available at all Antec Smartpower SP-550 - not available Antec Smartpower SP-500 - $117 Antec Neopower 480 - $166 Enermax EG-565P - $138 Enermax Noisetaker 495 - $112 Sparkle 550 60-PLN - $103 (but the suggested p/s is the 60-PLG) I wanted a modular power supply, if possible, and I thought that 2 12V rails each rated at up to 20A would be good, though I'm certain that they wouldn't both be able to put out even close to the full 20A. I saw the back of the actual power supply, and it said that the combined total from the 2 12V rails maxed out at 300W So which of the other available supplies do you think would be best? davidhammock200 Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 You didn't say which of the 3 models shown that you were considering & I though you were looking at the "GM520SC". Now I understand that you are looking at the "GM620SC". The "GM620SC" should be fine, although I would perfer the Enermax 535W myself. Good Luck, Dave
davidhammock200 Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Enermax EG-565P - $138Enermax Noisetaker 495 - $112 Sparkle 550 60-PLN - $103 (but the suggested p/s is the 60-PLG) Enermax & Fortron both make excellent PSU's, all Sparkles are made by Fortron. The "GM620SC" shows only 175W as the max combined +12V power, that is only 14.583A! Is their website wrong? EDIT: Their website has the wrong specs! EOC Review: http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews...One_570W_1.html I think that AG may have one of these.
dfimonkey Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 THis brand isnt listed on the first page, but it looks like a nice psu. Not great, but not bad either, however the following will probably soon become the "A" list for PSU recommendations, because these have been proven to provide the best results with the DFI N4 mobos. SLI PSU's: PC P&C 510 Express/SLI OCZ PowerStream 520W (1A less than nVidia recommends) or 600W Enermax 535W (2A less than nVidia recommends) or 600W Fortron/Sparkle 550W nVidia recommends +12V@34A for SLI. I know that the OCZ PowerStream 520W runs just about any SLI rig without problems & if fact Anandtech used the OCZ PS 520W for their SLI testing! IMO the Enermax 535W with a combined +12V@32A shouldn't have any problems either. Non-SLI PSU's: Enermax 485W or 495W Frotron Blue Storm 500W OCZ ModStream 520W
Doom5 Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Would you guys give the heads up to these two AMS power supplies? http://store.yahoo.com/directron/pp4306.html and http://store.yahoo.com/directron/pp5503eps.html Here's a review at slcentral of the "460" watt http://www.slcentral.com/dual-12v-psu-shootout/page3.php and http://www.slcentral.com/dual-12v-psu-shootout/page7.php It got a rave review there, and I could only imagine the 550watt for four 12v rails only being better. Yes Jonny liked them & no I don't recommend them for DFI N4 mobos, please see my previous "A" list post. Dave
Doom5 Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 Why don't you like them if one of them has been stress tested to hold up better than most power supplies out there and had solid rails. Jonny is also praised on the front page. Also extremely quiet, some people do sleep near their computers.

Doom5 Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 Okay, I understand that you recommend those power supplies, but you ignored my question completely. Why don't you consider these power supplies acceptable for the DFI? Because they're priced so low? What's your reasoning? I'm not trying to be a dick, I just want to understand your point of view.
