hello if i am not using the on board audio for the mobo will the optical out still work that connects to the mobo for the front X 5 1/2 bay?

I would think if you ran an add-in sound card that onboard would be disabled and the board outputs do not work at all then only the outputs on the add in card.

if you are not using the onboard audio then no the frontX will not work with the onboard components.

 

your PCI sound card might be able to take the connection from the FrontX device
