danny5 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I have been researching memory a lot as of recent. It came to my attention that Newegg has Geil 3200 Ultra-X 1 gig (2225) for $162 after MIR. After some research I found out that this memory is indeed Winbond UTT. I been also looking at TCCD memory, there are many brands available, but I been considering OCZ, since there is support here, but it is at $223. Both pricings are from Newegg. So, what would you choose, and why?
Angry_Games Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 After some research I found out that this memory is indeed Winbond UTT last ViperJohn and I checked, it was not even UTT, but BH-5 (there is indeed a difference)

danny5 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 here is another tidbit that I should have included in the origional post. I had placed an order for this RAM, but upon further investigation, I did find out that this ram is not TCCD, so I immediately canceled the order. Now that I am at home again, I compared the part numbers on the web site, and the part numbers that came with my order confirmation. The numbers on the web site are: Model #: GLX1GB3200DC the numbers on my order confirmation are: DDRAM 2x512MB PC-3200 GLX5123200UP Now, when I google the UP number, I get single memory modules, and when I google the DC number, I get dual channel packs. Dunno, is Newegg confused with their part numbers, or are they selling off single memory modules in pairs to get rid of them? I did call Newegg about the problem, and someone who didnt know anything told me that he will "look into it". Overall, I was very disappointed in calling newegg, I expected better. I waited on the phone for probably 20 minutes (toll free), just to get that answer. Just a comment, I use newegg a lot, but recently been using other e-tailors. mucker Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Thats' what I hate about buying memory. The manufacturers don't bother to change the product name or make the customer aware of the type of chips/PCB they are using. It may not be wrong to do so, but it sucks big time and males things very confusing. I bought some new Kingston ram for and old Dell (needed PC100). Kingston makes high and low density PC100 but the labeling is identical. Needless to say, I bought the stuff that didn't work. When I went back to check, sure enough, 2 different types of ram under an identical label. That's not good..... m
Angry_Games Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 your best bet for GEIL is to hit their forums and see what is said there. Thats how we found out the Ultra-X is now BH-5 instead of TCCD... Same ViperJohn that mods Radeon videocards ??? I got a X800XT modded with his heatsinks. the same. Mr Ownage himself lol
danny5 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Ofcourse you ae right AG, it is BH-5. From Johnkou @ Extreme systems, ""GEIL Ultra-X module used to equip with Samsung TCCD. It was able to overclock with low voltage. People love Samsung TCCD. Unfortunately, Samsung has stopped making TCCD this February. Therefore, we switch IC from Samsung TCCD to Winbond BH-5. Winbond BH5 needs higher voltage to raise it's clock speed or overclock; standard clock speed require 2.5 to 2.65v, OC to 260 or 270 require atleast 2.85+. However, there are only few motherboards support 2.85v; most of them are 2.8v top. "
Angry_Games Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 OC to 260 or 270 require atleast 2.85+ lol...i'd like to see 2.85v get 270 on BH-5 what he means is that BH-5, to get 250-270FSB, needs about 3.3v-3.6v (which it can easily handle)
danny5 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I been on the Geil forum looking around, lots of complaining that these mudules do not work well. The price is good, but I am leary for sure. TCCD is out of production, does any brand still have them for sure? I am getting nervous about getting some decent ram now.
