xWhiteboy55 Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 Hey guys, im back -- this time with an overclocking question. I hear that the GT is the card that everyone O/C's to an Ultra's settings. If it makes a nice difference, im down for it! But, my computer is stable right now, and I dont really want to take the chance of screwing it up by doing this O/C... Wat is the worst thing that can happen when I try to O/C it? It ruins my warranty right? ughh Anyway, supposedly coolbits doesnt let you mess anything up
EL_ Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjM3 that is a good place to get more info. As long as you do software only mods your warranty should be fine. Work slowly and run 3dmark to test new settings.
Smoken Joe Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 It is very easy to do some simple overclocking with coolbits or one of the drivers that automaticly allows it. I havent botherd with flashing the bios to ultra but be carfull before do it often ends up sloing things down as it gives the memory looser timing. If you do just increase the volts to the CPU. I havent botherd flashing yet I dont want to reinstall the Floppy.
needmorstuff Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 i flashed mine to ultra and the core now does 430 instead of 410, as you said the timings are looser and tbh no higher 3dmark score
Opponent Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 Be careful when overclocking your graphics card. It's very easy to do but you gotta take it easy by going in small steps, like 5 Mhz at a time. You really CAN kill the card if you're not careful there. Overclock either memory or core first, see where it goes, put it back at stock and overclock the other one. Always look closely if any artefacts can be seen and don't push any further, rather back down some 5-10 Mhzs. Test a lot and watch the temps too... My ATI cards core doesn't usually show any artifacts when pushing it too far, it just crashes, memory clocking gives "snow" or black dots.... But it really gives you a nice performance boost so I'd say go for it... :tooth:
tobias Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 i would go for it. the GT has a lot of potential. stock cooling sucks, but you can see in my sig what i was getting with it. i havnt had time to test mine more yet cuz im working on getting new ram stable, but after i added the zalman fan and ramsink kit, i was able to pass 3d mark at 430/1190, and i just tried that for the hay of it, i think it will go farther. my core was still under 60c after the test with 1.8 volts. xWhiteboy55 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I just have a question... Using coolbits, how Do I go about doing this -- I dont really understand the whole core and clock concept. Can someone explain to me what pattern I should use when I go about overclocking? I want to get extra frame rates on games running 1600x1200
-aDaM^ Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I am pretty sure you can Flash the BIOS and actully make it a Ultra. I did this on my old MSI 5900 XT and flashed it to a 5950 Ultra still have it, awesome card.
xWhiteboy55 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 lol, I donno about that... any other suggestions?
daglesj Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Not too much difference flashing a GT to Ultra spec. As the Ultra has memory timings that dont work to your advantage with a GT's ram setup. Win some/lose some!

Can someone explain to me what pattern I should use when I go about overclocking? I want to get extra frame rates on games running 1600x1200 It is so simple it might seem hard. Look at that article. You get to the cards clockspeed screen hit select auto detect then the test changes button. Those are usualy a little optimistic so try to lower them a bit for playing games the computer will get hot and heat is the enimy of overclocking. You can also make changes and test them by sliding the bar............dont forget to check apply these settings at start up and to have 3d and 2d apps run at the same speed- this is all in the same screen. Well Im running an EIZO 58 21 inch now (Thx forum member Florian who sold it to me ) and I play Doom 3 right now. I have the High graphics setting and the 4*Anti Aliasing enables. This was not a 100 % smooth I had some irregularities when playing. So I used Vtune2 and upped my card to 400/1100 and I still get some issues when in an extreme area with a gasleak / flashing light (broken electricity) / flashlight (thrugh the gas cloud) and a monster at the same time. but I can live with that under normal playing its as smooth as a baby buttom...
