Sudden death of my UIltra-d?

Recommended Posts

Well I got to turn my computer on this morning. Fans spin up like normal and it gets to the BIOS beep time and instead of a nice "beep" theres a "beeeep". Uhoh. so I try restarting with no avail. IV tried everything this morning, from clearing cmos, holding insert, pulling power and battery. All I get is the 3 leds and a flashing power LED light on the case. And of course the long beep once every 5 secs or so. Could my ram have suddenly died? I did accidentally boot it up the other day at "2-2-2-2" timgs  . Was distracted so forgot to put a "7" for the Tras. Booted up fine before I went back into BIOS to run memtest, ran that for a bit then got bored and went to turn off memtest and realised what I had done. Could that have distroyed my ram? Been running it at 2-2-2-7 all day yesterday and no problems that I could see. Was running HL2 pretty much the whole afternoon  and never had an issue.

Right now Im starting to get a bit frustrated. THis is the 3RD time that this boot has refused to boot!

(note there has been no overclocking. Only a memory timing change and memory has been left at DDR400)

First thing I'd do is shut it off , pull AC power and the CMOS batter and then clear the CMOS with the jumper. Often that's all it takes to get going again.

Don't panic, just troubleshoot methodically and don't assume the sky is falling.

Sorry, skimmed your post.

Did you try running the bare minimum of parts? Graphics card , 1 stick of mem, CPU, hard drive.. or a floopy with boot disk, or an OS install disc?

If you're worried about the RAM you could try the RAM in another system, or try known working mem on your system.

I wonder if your BIOS got corrupted and you may need borrow a BIOS chip, or hot flash your BIOS on an identical board?

thus is the problem. I have no other 184pin DDR and no other computer that can use it. Nor do I have another computer to flash the BIOS with.

and I only have one stick of ram soo choices are limited. Gonna try a mcuh longer CMOS reset with battery pulled and see if I can get progress. if only it would stop beeping then Id know things were ok :(

is it beep_-_ beep or is it beeep-beeep? Or similar?

Because if it is the longer beep wait and beep it is likey the universal code now that means memory/video and such is not detected as installed or they are failed.

Yep that sounds like the long beep rest beep for memory or now days video card and such. I would almost say to remove all cards and memory and all power input to the board and let sit overnite and upon re-assemble I have seen most come back if it is truly not bad memory.

yeah its like "beeeepp rest rest beeeeep"

which I was looking around seems to point towards my ram :(

what do you mean bring it from the dead? What do you do to it?

Im pretty tempted to just a whole new one considering all the issues I have had with it but willing to hear anything but BIOS reflash. Tryed that and it didnt get me anywhere the first time. ;)
