Just in stalled my MB into the case

Recommended Posts

I'm itching to start building this beast listed below, so I went ahead and installed the motherboard into the case. Since it's the CM/Stacker I have plenty of room to move around it, and can almost crawl inside the case to work!

Took me all morning to sit back and look at the case and the cable hook-ups. I don't want this thing to be a tangle of cables, so I spent most of the time snaking cables and fan wires and the Crossflow fan around....which brings me to my classy lady:

The Crossflow fan for the CM/Stacker is a PAIN to install. They give you these little tiny screws to place in, and of course I received no instructions on how to install it, so it was pretty much guesswork. Then I didn't want the little power on/off switch for the fan to take up a card-slot space, so I ended up letting it hang down to the bottom of the case up under where the drives will be. I didn't want it installed on the back because I have the two PCI-E slots which will hold two video cards, and if they're big cards with fat fans, I don't see my Audigy going in the second-to-last slot...which means it has to go into the last slot. So I didn't want the Crossflow fan and all the power wires going to and from it mucking up the tight spaces around there.

Anyone else have the CM/Stacker with crossflow? How have you dealt with it?

no but i wish they made one for the praetorian.

it sounds like you did ok with it, those pci slot controllers blow. can you hook it ontop a 3-1/2 or 5-1/4 controller? i use the nexus to control the 2 front and 1 top fan on mine.

let us know how that thing sounds and works.

good luck.

btw- you'll love the board :)

Yeah the crossflow does have kind of a cheap feel to it when you go to install it. It seems to work pretty well though. Do yourself a favor and make some kind of filter for the side panel air inlet directly behind the crossflow fan. It will save a lot of dust getting onto your mainboard. I also didn't want the fan controller so I just hooked the power connection directly to a power supply connector. It runs at full speed all the time but it's not that loud so it doesn't bother me.

I installed my crossflow in the case before installing the mobo...its not that difficult just four screws. Once it is installed and you see how it affects your sys temps you won't be complaining any more.

I run a 6800gt with nv silencer in the top 16x slot, my audigy2 zs in the bottom pci slot, and the fan controller in the slot directly up from the audigy. I then use one power supply dongle with 2 molex and 1 floppy connectors to connect the mobo floppy and molex connectors, as well as the crossflow molex connector. This keeps things tidy enough for me, but there is a cable running over the side of the vido card which, if you are really concerned with asthetics, might concern you.

You can always just plug the 3 pin connector of the crossflow fan into the power supply or into a fan controller...then you dont have to deal with the pci slot for the controller. I run mine at full time anyways so I might end up doing that.

But don't ditch the crossflow fan just because of the cabling...frankly it is the most effective cooling device I have, especially sinse the orientation of this mobo makes it perfect for the air to flow thru the ram slots.

No no, I'm not going to ditch the Crossflow at all, but I will ditch the controller for it and just install it directly into a fan controller on the mobo.

I also like the DFI design with the RAM slots going across the top, this way the Crossflow will be blowing air between the sticks to keep them cool also.
