Guest Partizan Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Hi! I hav a serious problem. I cannot use the first Pci Express slot, because the Chipset fan is blocking it. It is blocking the second slot too, but not as much. I didn't dare and try forcing my X800XL into the first slot. Too bad. Any suggestions what I can do to use the first PciE slot? Regards, Partizan
MassiveOverkill Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 It should fit. There's like 1-2mm clearance. Only reason why I think it wouldn't fit is if you're using really short motherboard standoffs, which are causing your card to fit in the slot skewed or raised so that the back edge of the card is lower. Silk Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I have a BBA ATI X800XL and it clears by 1-2 mm like MO says. Are you installing this in the case or outside? Outside of the case, the PCI slot tabs will extend below your mobo and cause your card to sit at an angle. This will cause it to hit the fan. Girth_Maul Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I had to wiggle my sapphire x800xl around a bit in the slot till it would work and it cleared the fan at the same time.
pgamble Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 This is another one of the situations where some boards are fine and some are not. A number of the production boards (including my first one) have a poorly installed chipset fan which doesn't stop you installing a graphics card. DFI will suggest removing the fan and reseating it which should give you that 1-2mm clearance. I would RMA it if I were you because they won't cover you if you damage something. My second board was fine. Paul.
pgamble Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Sorry ... I should have said does stop you installing the card correctly !
cantankerous Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 My powercolor X800XL fits just fine though yes extremely tight. Looking at it you would think it is actually touching. I have an ATI Silencer 5 on the way. I only hope the card still fits after installing that though I heard of no one having any reputable problems doing so. pgamble Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 It's not dependent on the GFX card .... it all comes down to the original product of the motherboard - i.e. whether you are unlucky to be one of the few (albeit significant few) that has a poorly installed fan. As regards the new cooler for you GFX card .... I have no personal experience although I have heard there is a protusion on the bottom of the Artic Cooler which needs to be shaved off as it clashes with something. The 850PE core hits between 85 and 100+ degrees C under load. This is apparently within spec but has me thinking I may change the cooler. I have a sensor on the metal heat spreader on the underside of the card below the core .... and at this point it never gets over 65. The cooler must therefore be pretty efficient on it's own. piotrgurin Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Oh boy, I hope i don't get this problem. I'll be putting together the same rig today. I'll let you know about the clearance.
wickedld9 Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 You could try pulling the fan off and cleaning off the thermal tape that dfi used and replacing with AS5. This might give you just enough clearance.
Muzikfreakah Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I have the gecube x800 xL, no problem here. ALthough I have asked a friend to buy the sliencer 5 as well. cantankerous Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I removed my chipset fan right out of the box, took off the gum and put on ceramique. Can't get much lower than that without removing the shim.
