Rezag1000 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I was going to build a comp and I was wondering if I need a floppy drive. I figured I would flash bios with winflash, and since I wont be running a raid array, I wont need to install SATA drivers off a floppy. What do you guys think. Although floppies dont cost much, I am on a budget and evert bit helps. Thanks!!
e_lion_1 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 you are right, floppies aren't really needed, but they make creating a BIOS or memtest floppy really easy. Most drives are between 7 and 16 dollars or so. and convienent for copying small files between unconnected computers... here's a link to check out and compare: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...anufacture=SONY I've ordered a few things from here and have not been dissapointed... Rezag1000 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 So are you sure I don't really need one?
THunDA Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I dont think they are absolutly required.. But in times where you might need to flash the bios but cant get into windows to use winflash they come in handy. There is a image file that someone posted which will let you make a bootable CD with all the current bios files on it .. This is good, but honestly I still find myself needing a floppy from time to time.. Its not like the savings from a floppy drive will be able to by something else..hehe.. They are sooo cheap.. They are sooo cheap.. on the contrary. For me, if I spend an extra $15 on a floppy, I cannot get a 3200+. I will have to settle for a 3000+ and the 9x multiplier. So this is quite a big choice for me.
Prostock62 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Get the 3200 for now if money is tight at the time, you can always add a flopy in the future. Its not required that you need one,but like Thunder says it might get you out of a jam sometime.I use mine often for small files. Smoken Joe Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 You can always steal one out of an old computer. I dont have mine in the computer though i do have one if I need it for some strange reason.

I do the same .. I hav one floppy drive and 1 floppy disk. They sit on a shelf and are shared between 3 systems on an as needed basis. Said drive was pulled from a junk system that I acquirec when building a new system for a client. (I did need the drive and disk to update my bios on my SLI-DR)
Rezag1000 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I have a floppy drive in an 8 year old IBM aptiva, ( brings back memories), will that work. Or is it simply to old and has the connection changed in the past decade? lol

And like someone said above you dont even have to put it in if its ugly.. Just to have one to hook up if needed is good.. For me im always changing bios and doing things that I tend to use mine quite frequently..
