LanParty 875B revA- stalls-won't even go to BIOS

Recommended Posts

Power on the board and the cpu fan does half a spin (due probably to surge of power) then nothing. mobo lights stay on (2 red ones, NOT the diagnostic ones), no other power. Power switch then does nothing, locked up. Unplug power cable and re-plug, same thing over again. No beeps, never reaches BIOS.

Board is completely stripped except the 2 main power connectors and out of the case at this point. Not even the Vid Card or RAM inserted.

--> ODD THING! If I remove the 4 pin 5v from mobo and power up with just the 20 pin, the cpu fan works normally, stays powered on.

I have burn tested the RAM (passed) and PSU cables (passed). Made sure cpu was mounted properly with enough thermal paste etc etc etc. It is not grounding out. Tried re-setting the BIOS (remove battery and change jumper, 60 secs)

Just recieved mobo new in mail Wednesday. PSU was bought earlier in the week. Won the X800 Pro 256 at a LAN party this past weekend. Maxtor Drive with OS installed bought new Thursday. NOTHING OC'd.

Everything was functional at the 2 day LAN over the weekend when I set up the rig upon return. Working fine last night after I set up the RAID with the Raptors. Came home from work today and this is how I found it....

So need help with explanation of why it appears it would run properly with 4 pin 5v disonnnected, but won't stay started long enough to even post while it is inserted.

*I have not tried running it for more then 10- 15 secs with the 4 pin removed, but that is long enough to tell it is the single different response I get when powering up.

Thx in advance for any input, ideas etc.

Thx for the reply.

I had tried that.

Same result unfortunately.

I think it is narrowed down to the board or cpu. I don't understand the relationship/functionality re: board/cpu/psu and the 4 pin connection to pursue it further on my own. I don't know where to look for that info.

For example, with the 4 pin inserted, does it negate start up to protect the cpu if there is a problem with the baord as a safety measure? Does removing the 4 pin allow the cpu fan to function but not the cpu?

I believe I have trouble shot every obvious route but happy to take even the most obvious suggestions. I need to figure if I RMA the board which would take a lot of time as well as more money if they test it and find no problems (they charge if that's the case) or if I need a new cpu.

The reason I have a new board & psu is because of an electrical issue with last board.... while switching out dimms I hadn't unplugged psu and something smoked. I think I grounded something out.

Turns out the psu was fine (now in my brothers PC) but I had surmised the board was dead as I couldn't get that one to post up either.

The RAM passed 6 hours of burn tests after that. The board, psu, hdd and grfx card are all new and ran like a charm through the weekend. I suppose I will also have to consider further if something like the RAM is faulty and causing problems with the cpu or board.

I'm certain it is in the correct spot. Ii is clearly labled and I was able to read the cpu fan specs through BIOS before the problem.

I think I'm on the right track with it being either mobo or cpu as initial problem, but I am going to trade in my psu to be certain. (The 2cd one I tried was same brand/model).

That is how the board was when I initially posted, just the 2 power supply cables attached, absolutely nothing else. No differences than with any other combo of hardware attached.

Anyways, I RMA'd the board and sent it away this AM for a refund so this will remain a mystery.

Thx for the posts.
