NewDFIUser Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Im about to fire this puppy up as soon as my 6600GT arrives, but my power supply is questionable, given what has been said on this board. (400w, 18a on the +12v rail.) My question is, I wont hurt my board by using a power supply that is inadequate will I? I want to try it, because I cant afford a l337 power supply. EDIT: On a side note, will samsung PC3200 memory be okay on this board? I've used samsung in the past and its always been good to me, but i've never had a board this finicky. danny5 Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I dont think you can burn up anything, but you can corrupt your OS, and possibly fuber up the bios. FYI, I am in the same situation, using a 430w Antec. It runs great at default speeds, but will not take a OC at all. A Fortron Blue 500 is on the way though. entrancer0122 Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I've killed 2 MOBO's with bad power supplies. it is possible so tread lightly. Fortron Bluestorm 500 $89 at the egg.
NewDFIUser Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I dont do the egg anymore, they screwed me over royally. What about a Premium 500w ATX PS? 28a on +12v, and its more in my price range.
danny5 Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Newegg is out of stock anyway. I ended up orfering from Electroseller, same price and free shipping.
kdog Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 My fortron blue storm got delivered yesterday. NICE power supply. I love the braided cables and ergo molex connectors. Ordered mine from CircoTech, who was cheaper than the "egg" after shipping. I would spend the little extra for a quality PSU, it will save you headaches in the end. A good power supply is the ground work for a smooth running machine.
NewDFIUser Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Please bear in mind that I only plan on a mild overclock and only have 1 CD-RW and 1 SATA HDD

You computer might work if that psu is really really quality one, i have one psu with only 15amps on +12V rail that runs the computer on a sig just fine. NewDFIUser Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Think i'd be okay with a not-so-uber not-so-name-brand 450w, 26a, ATX 2.0 compliant PS? (Austin or some BS like that.)

Some brands like q-tec or codegen that are on sale around where i live are not okay even with 550w. So bull crap isn't recomended even if it comes with shiny package and large numbers. :shake:
NewDFIUser Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Damn, what happened to the good ol' days where 300 - 400w was sufficient no matter what was delivering it. One of the local computer stores here has a machine on display that is identical to mine, but it has an Abit board. It uses the same power supply and runs fine. illegible Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I for one would like some clarification on this issue, which I would break down into 2 parts: Quality of the P-Supply - this has always been an issue, you get what you pay for, essentially you can't always trust the Amps on the 12V rail (s) which gets into the other question: if there truly is a problem with the min Amps on the 12V rail with dual rail P-supplies (as spec'ed in the ATX 2.0 standard) then should't people be having problems with the 12V 15A max, per rail, on the dual rail Fortron blue? (i got the spec from the circotech website) Yet it comes highly recomended, is this just because no ones pumped a lot of mods to it, or is it going to be rock solid the whole way? My 600W enermax is only supposed ot have 18A per rail, is the going to be enough when i mod it later on? quite frankly i would like to return it if it isn't, and dissuade other people from going down the wrong route. Is there anyway we could get one of the engineers from DFI to clear up what the power (amp) requirements for the NF4 SLI boards with two vid cards and a powerful proc?
