Overclocker16 Posted June 11, 2003 Posted June 11, 2003 Anyone know how big RH9 or Mandrake or any easier Linux fully come out to? When you download it's like 600MB (on some) but then when you install it it's like 1GB or bigger. I need an easy to learn Linux that fully comes out to about 800MB or so. I am wanting this for my server. I do not have use of a floppy drive, so I can't make disc. As far as space, I have a 1.2GB drive. If I can find another IDE cable then I will have 2.4GB. But anything that will fully install to 800MB-1GB would be best.
ukmike02 Posted June 11, 2003 Posted June 11, 2003 Slackware is a good distro if you have limited hard disk space. There is also zipslack, which is a cut down version of slackware. Their site is http://www.slackware.org, slackware is great for old PCs and laptops, I have seen many users use it and I use it myself. I have not used the latest versions. With the old versions you have to startX manually on first startup and then set it to auto start. I would assume this has been changed with the latest versions, or a choice given in isntallation. Overclocker16 Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 I would like to buy Linux, but can't, so it would be easier to download from linuxiso.org (I believe.) But I don't know what one to go with. But from all these (from multiple forums) looks like I will download Slackware. Unless I can get a copy of Server 2003 Enterprise (might be able to get one.) I am going to download Slackware from ftp://ftp.cerias.purdue.edu/pub/os/slackware/ What one do I choose? slackware-9.0-iso. slackware-current. slackware-9.0. I don't know what one I should choose. I know it should be ISO...only Linux I have used was Red Hat and that was pretty easy to download...
JeepGC96ZJ Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 Well to help you out a little bit I am a noob at the linus stuff too. I tried REd hat and it was no to my tast. My friend told me to try out Mandrake. Now I know it runs the same wahy but I love the layout of Mandrake. They also let you Dowmload them in the ISO form so you can compy the three CDs 650 MB each from fast servers and burn the ISO directly to a disk. Then boot your PC up to disk one. If your looking to do anythign with Linux you might want to think about getting abigger Hard drive. 4 GB or more. and atleast 128 or 256 MB of memory. For a noob I really like the feel of Mandrake! Overclocker16 Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 Umm. I only have a 1.2GB drive until. I am not getting a bigger drive until I really start hosting my own site. I don't want something huge. 1 I don't want to wait all night for it all to download. I would rather download 1 or 2 small to medium ISO's. I don't need something like RH or Mandrake. If I did, I would throw the copy of RH I have on there.

ukmike02 Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 I think slackware and debian are pretty good distros. Have you ever considered College Linux v2.3 or Crux 1.1. They come on 1 CD, I have only used them a few times and never really took note on how much space they took up, but it cant be much, I think crux is only a few hundred megabytes on the CD. You want slackware 9 ISO.
