roib Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Hi Guys, I've just finished setting up my new system yesterday (Spec in signature) and I seem to have a strange problem with the Ultra-D board regarding USB. Whenever I plug in a USB device to the board it just hangs and won't boot (In the post screen only the processor information appears, doesn't even proceed to memory testing). I tried several USB devices (Keyboard, DOK) in all of the ports and they all seem to end up in the same situation. It's worth mentioning that whenever I plug in a USB device while in Windows it works perfectly. The very very strange thing I noticed is that whenever I change the "USB Keyboard Support" or "USB Mouse Support" in the bios to enabled, the system will hang in a similar manner even if there's no USB device attached. P.S - I already tried clearing the CMOS and loading optimized settings, No effect. P.S2 - The system is not overclocked in any manner and runs stable through memtest and prime. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
RGone Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 You are not the first one to have that problem. As far as I know there has not been a definitive cure. I lean toward it being some form of Nforce chipset problem as even my NF3 will not boot with a UsB pendrive in it and yet the same pen drive in my Via Chipset A64 board > well it boots every time. I know that when the Lunar New Year is over in the Eastern regions and all get back to work engineering is going to have to take a look at it. Need you to post exactly the model and whatever that exactly describes your non-bootable unit so I can tell engineering "exactly" what is NOT working. RGone... roib Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Hi RGone, thanks for your rapid and informative reply. After I read my own post yesterday it accured to me that I haven't tried one single thing - to set both "USB keyboard support" and "USB mouse support" to enabled. well, that setting seem to help as my system finally posted with usb devices connected to it (even though it takes s bit longer, say 2 seconds, before "Verifying dmi pool data" appears). Nevertheless, I still think there's a problem to be fixed so here are the devices I've used: - Sandisk cruzer micro - Maxtor External HD (Can't remember the model - 7200 RPM, 80 GB, USB 2.0) - Micorsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 4.0A Once again, thanks for the support. tristancarton Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 rgone, any update on the usb boot scenario? i hooked up my external usb 2.0 80 gig drive the other day and my nf3 250gb doesn't like to boot into windows with it plugged in.(just keeps restarting after my raid array is detected) i played around with a bunch of setting in the bios (boot order, enable usb for keyboard/storage/mouse) all to no avail. is this a confirmed hardware chipset problem with nf3 and nf4? my bios can see the drive, it just can't get into windows when it is hooked up. (not a big deal but sort of annoying that i have to unhook and hook it up every time i want to restart) i can give you exact details if you want. (bios version, hard drive, etc)
cjoe7 Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 This seems to be a problem with NForce chips. It happened on my previous Nforce2 & Nforce4 chipsets. Its been a problem. Cjoe
tristancarton Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 bump for anymore official word on the usb boot problem with my nforce3 ut250.(or for anyoen who has a nf3 that can get this to work) is this fixable with a bios update? or is it hardware? getting tired of having to unhook external harddrive when i want to reboot. if no fix i will prob end up buying a cheap 200 gig sata drive to replace my external. RGone Posted February 26, 2005 Posted February 26, 2005 roib, seemed to fix his problem with NF4 by setting keyboard USB items correctly and I have a Lexar USB Thumb drive plugged into my NF4 that will allow "booting' to continue on my NF4 board but will NOT boot completely if that USB drive is plugged into my NF3. So it appears NF3 board related to me. RGone...
tristancarton Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 rgone do you know if this is something to expect a bios fix for or is it a hardware nf3 chipset problem that a bios fix wouldn't help? if you don't know can you please inform oskar and eng. quality and control about it. sure the problem may be fixed on the new just released nf4 board but i would really like it to be fixed on the older nf3 one as well. (if this is possible) once again thanks for your reponses. it's nice to have real tech support guys responding to problems. one reason why i bought dfi and will continue to do so in the future.(other reason is you guys make killer boards) i may post at amdmb.com as well to see if anyone else has the issue and if they have gotten it figured out. i will update if i find anything useful. again thanks. roib, seemed to fix his problem with NF4 by setting keyboard USB items correctly and I have a Lexar USB Thumb drive plugged into my NF4 that will allow "booting' to continue on my NF4 board but will NOT boot completely if that USB drive is plugged into my NF3. EvoFighter Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 hi all, my first post here. I have some glitches setting up my Ultra-D initially and after using RGone's sticky setting, all seems stable now. I read somewhere that user with USB problem may try to change the jumper for USB power select from 5V to 5VSB (Page 30 of the Manual). BTW, RGone, if my RAM (Hynix BT-D43) can run at 2.5-3-3-8 (when auto detect), what setting should I change in the Genie Bios to boost the RAM performance. Also, my AMD 3500+ Winchester should use now much voltage? I am first time AMD and DFI user, so kinda blur, have been reading a lot lately on these things recently. crazi Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 I think I have the same problem but I have not power to my usb. I can not access my manual because I have no cd-rom on this computer. Not mine neither so I can not really install one neither. So any links would be appricatied.
