madpete Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Hi guys, Just setup my first DFI based system (always stuck with Abit before), specs in sig, and I'm having a bit of a mare. Randomly after the system boots into windows, it will hard lock up. This can take 30mins or 30 seconds, and I can't track down whats causing it. Ram passes memtest ok, tried uping voltages, slackening timmings etc, updated bios to latest version, I have all the additional power connectors plugged into the board, still no luck. Temps are all good, CPU@27 degrees, chipset 34 degress. Also I am running stock at the mo, as not stable enough to O/C. Anyone seem anything similar? Or got any ideas? I really need some help
RGone Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Firstly, no I have not seen such. There is not a wealth of fixes cataloged against problems for the boards yet. You will have to do some trouble shooting in a logical and systematic order. 1. What bios are you using? 2. Have you turned off Bank Interleave? 3. Have you tried 2.5, 4, 3, 7 on that memory? 4. Do you have 2.9Vmem? 5. I mean you do 'say' you are going to overclock so loosen the memory to be ready to go up and then see. If you do not get any response from those type of things I suspect a driver problem and you need to look at windows error log and see what things are showing the error. Make sure also to set windows to not reboot but to list the error code at any blue screen. RGone...
madpete Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Ok, after trying all the usual suspects (volts, timmings, bios updates), I may have cured it. I did the following: 1. Uninstalled the nvidia chipset drivers, reinstalled them without IDE drivers (why the hell I installed them in the first place I dont know, maybe just figured they would have fixed them by now!) 2. Disabled CPU thermal throttling in the bios 3. Uninstalled the Nvidia firewall software I left the PC running over night, and this morning its still going
Smoken Joe Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 There was a problem with the IDE drivers? It seemed like there might ahve ben a problem with the IDE I was wondering if SATA might not work better on this board though things sure load quickly. The nvidia sure takes up a lot of bandwidth. One time I was using it and it and the network driver were taking up so much of the CPU time that the computer was freezing. Oh well routers are cheap. madpete Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Yeah, I'm hooked up through a router, much better as more than one PC in the house. I think it was either the NV drivers or the thermal throttling if I had to go with an instinct, but I'd have to do more testing to confirm one way or the other. I'm just glad its working at the mo, spent a lot of money on this system.
madpete Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Oh man, it just locked up on me again
NEOAethyr Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 This is out of my area, I dn have the board, but does that board have APIC? APIC, or APM, same thing. If it does, try turning that off. 1st check the bios to see if it's an option, then if it is, goto the device manager, under computer. Change the driver for that, change it to Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC. Then reset, change the option for APIC to disabled in the bios, then startup windows again and see if you continue to have problems. A warning though, once you chnage that driver to that in windows, you cannot chnage it back without re-enabling that in the bios, and then re-installing windows all over again. Anyways APIC was a prob on the older boards, maybe it's still a problem ^^, It think it was even a problem on non nvidia chipsets as well, I can't even remember the cpu type lol. I think it's worth a shot. I hope it is lol, dn wanna look like an @ss .
madpete Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Thanks Man, if my current working theory doesn't work out i'll give that a go next, I've seen the option in the bios. I'm thinking it might be my DVD-ROM drive, because: A: The system has hung a couple of times copying files B: There's loads of error msg's in event log about the drive C: Drive seems slow, wont autostart, and doesn't seem to know when you've changed cd's. Might be clutching at straws like, but I've unhooked it to see. No lockups yet, but time will tell.
xgman Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 look in device manager and make sure the ide's are really back to "standard" If not, update it from there.
madpete Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Just to update, since I removed the Plextor PX-116A DVD-ROM from the system I have had no more freezing. Replaced it with an Asus drive and having no problems, if the Plextor is faulty or incompatible I don't know.
Angry_Games Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 try updating the firmware for the Plextor? Its a longshot but it might work...
madpete Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Thanks AG, took a look but Plextor doesn't seem to have any firmware for the drive. Oh well, I'm happy enough with the Asus. Main thing is it works!
