Flying_High Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Well Hi everybody...quite impressive forum I must say...! My Lanparty NFII Ultra B is running like a breeze, no problems at all! So why am I here? I am planning to add memory, and after having read a few threads on the subject, I thought I would do some research before bying... As you can see in my sig i have 1GB spread out on two 512MB sticks sitting in slot 1 and 3. Now, I want to add 1GB. I have read a few threads touching this subject, but still not exactely my setup... Questions: - Is it correct that I should move one 512MB stick from slot 3 to slot 1 and add the 1GB stick to slot 3? - Do I get dual channel if I configure it like that? - How sensitive is the "dual channel" concept? In the manual it says "same memory configuration" have to be used. What exactely is that? - If I add memory with different CAS than the original (TWINX1024-3200LL 2-3-2-6), will I still get dual channel? If i could find memory with same spec as the original, it wouldn't be so difficult, but there doesn't seem to be a 1GB module with CAS 2-3-2-6 around...? Maybe I would be best off getting two matched (does such things exist by the way?) 1GB sticks, and sell the TWINX's... I would be really greatful if somebody could give me a few hints... Majin Vegita Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 word i'm wondering the same thing, i just added 2x256 hyperx and was wondering if i could throw some value ram into the mix all ddr 400. to keep in dual channel the 2 512 chips would have to be in dim 1 and 3 2 would hold ur 1 gig. unless u can mix the 2 different sizes in dual channel... donno about that though. Mr Stom Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Flying_High, In order for 2GB dual channel to work you need to have 1gb of ram on each channel. Slots 1 and 2 share the same channel and slot 3 is the second channel, thats why the slots are separated a little on the board. The only way to get dual channel to run on your configuration would be to have both your 512Mb sticks in slots 1 and 2, and the 2nd 1Gb stick in slot 3. This would give you a gig on each channel. As for the latency thing, the latencies of each stick would have to run the same, as you can only set the latency for the memory as a whole and cannot set latencies for each stick independantly. So if you were running stck with different SPDs, you would have to run one stick at different timings to its SPD. It should work just fine, but there is a definite possibility it might not as you would not have definitely matched sticks of RAM and so there isa possibility thatdual channel may not be enabled. The only way to guarantee dual channel to work with 2Gb, would be to buy a matched pair of 1gb sticks as you suggested. This will cost you muchos $$$$ though (~$500) Mr Stomly. Flying_High Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Thanx for your reply's... Ok, it's pretty much as I thought then, it's trial and error procedure. How can i see if the memory runs in single or dual channel mode? I tried to run CPU-Z, but it sais "An error occured when opening the driver. CPU-Z will launch but all information won't be available". And that's correct, everything about mainboard, memory and SPD is blank. And one final thing: does dual channel really give any practical performance gain? Is it worth all the hazzle to try to get the memory to run in dual channel mode...? Poisonsnak Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 On any AthlonXP board the increase is about 5% only since the FSB is maxed out anyway having dual channel does not really help that much. I am running 3 512MB sticks (1GB on one channel and 512MB on the other) and it works fine in dual channel if you're wondering. They are all corsair CMX512-3200C2 but two are rev 1.2 (CH-5) and one is rev 5.1 (definitely not CH-5) and they get along well. Majin Vegita Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 my puter didn't like it when i popped in my extra 256 of value ram w/ my hyperx. just repeated post as usual :-P hyperx in 1 and 3 and valueram in

Flying_High Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I am greatful for all comments and hints.... With the help from Angry_Games I could conclude that my MB is in dual channel now at least. I think I will try a Kingston KHX3200/1G HyperX 1024Mb PC3200 module. It is specified at CAS2.5, which seems to be the fastest 1GB module around. Just have to try it and see if it will cooperate with my Corsair TWINX 512 Mb modules... I will be back with the results. Probably will be a week or two... :cat:
Flying_High Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Hi again. For those of you interested: I have now added 1GB (Kingston KHX3200/1G HyperX 1024Mb/1Gb DDR PC3200 400MHz [1024DDRK400] specified as CAS 2.5) and put it into slot 3. My previous memory (Corsair TWINX1024-3200LL 2x512 MB, specified as CAS2) which was previously in slot 1 and 3 is now in slot 1 and 2 (one channel of its own). And... YES it is working in dual channel... 1 GB in each. Thanx all you guys for advice. The mere fact that there is proffesional DFI-people represented here at the forum will influence me when there comes the time for upgrading motherboard... /Lasse
