AMD64 multiplier & RAM question

I am kind of new to overclocking and would like to know why people lower their multiplier to increase FSB/HTT. I think I am missing something. I have an AMD64 3000 CPU which is running at 2320 (232x10). If I lower my multiplier to 9 and increase my HTT to 258, does this give me the same system performance or better? Do I need to go over 258 to see any increase in system performance?

My other question is, what is the best OCing RAM? I currently have GEIL value ultra PC3200 (i think it's 2.5-3-3-8). I can't get passed 230 HTT as I get a memory error in Prime95.

Thank you.

Performace wise, a higher FSB will give your better memory bandwith if you are running 1:1 ratio. If you're unable to raise the multiplier to increase clock speeds you could lower it and treat it as a performance trade off. If you know you CPU isn't stable at 2.5GHz on the stock multiplier (say 10x250), but you have very fast ram that isn't running at it's highest potential, you can try lowering the multiplier to 9 and running your RAM at full pelt (9x278) to make the most of the memory bandwidth available. So, running at 9x278 will actually benchmark and "feel" faster than running at 10x250 even though the Ghz is the same.

As far as ram goes, I'm not sure what the hottest brand going right now. There was a thread on here where Shroomtastic was talking about some certain TwinMos sticks that were cheap and doing great, but I think they were kinda hard to come buy. I would like to know this myself, since I'm looking to buy some good ram also that is readiky available but not ridiculously expensive.
