LP 250GB UT / few questions .

Recommended Posts

I put my first A64 system together and seeing some possible issues so i got a few questions for the more experienced user .

First off i noticed my idle temps seem high --> 49° on a boxed cooler . Read something allready (been reading this forum for over 3 hours lol ) that changing to another BIOS can help get more accurate readouts .

-What is an avg temperature i should be getting idling in windows on 3200+

-What is standard Vcore , someone my AUTO value seemed high to me but i havent looked into this yet .

-What is the best way for applying AS on a heatspreaded core . I used my old banccard method . But i kept thinking damn i need alot of it to cover it all . My old XP only needed a drop of AS3 , i'm using AS5 now btw and i really dislike the feel of it even when heated .

-What bios would you recommend i upgrade to ?

Then i ran into some, to put it mildly, trouble this afternoon when i wanted to use norton ghost to make a backup of a clean XP install .

I found some mentions about troubles using it but no real sollutions and most seem to be about intel based boards . In looking for information i then read that for any oc over 240FSB your gonna have to need SATA ports 3 and 4 .

Next i made the horrible mistake of powering down and changing the sata cables to port 3 and 4 . First boot i got a NTDLR (or summit) is missing after a few tries i switched port 3 to port 4 and vice versa and windows booted . In windows i got a few new hardware recognised screen and some autoinstalling (there's this one thing called a PCI dual channel sate something :s) .

I rebooted to try out ghost again (hey you never know) but failed again . When i then tried to reboot into windows at one point my computer just frooze . After the second try i used F8+last known working cfg . And here i am know, feeling like incompetent twat and with a f0rked windows install that wont back up with ghost :/ .

I cant really formulate direct questions about the second paragraph cause i'm not sure what exactly happened there . I do wonder though is it normal to get in the . like this just by swapping to the other sata ports ?

Is there a slight change that me not installing the raid drivers when i installed windows did this ?

If you got any tips on how to succesfully prime my puter for some oc'in plz enlighten me , its obvious S754 has got me by the ballz =] . Dont remember feeling so lost when switchin to nforce²

I really need ghost or something similar, i do a backup every few weeks to keep things fast with ghost.....

Idle temps seem a little high. Most people on air cooling are in the 32-42 range. Flashing to the 9/14 or 10/15 may correct your reading and drop you 10 degrees or so, which would put you in the average range.

Default Vcore is 1.5v.

To apply AS5, follow this GUIDE which was written by Mr. AngryGames himself. Very detailed with tons of pics.

I would reccomend the 10/15 Bios with the memtest built in.

As far as your other issue goes: I'm sure someeone with more experiecne on the ghosting issue will chime in.

Good Luck

With shipping bios it was around 41c. When I updated to 10/15 oskar, it dropped to around 33c idle. This is a problem w/ many other nf3 boards as well.

assuming air, and remember ambient temp plays a part too...31c to 39c is ok. Up to 60c under load.

for that chip 1.5v.

NO you don't need alot, in fact too much can become insulating. Just a drop about the size or an uncooked grain of rice in center of heatspreader. Gently lay down the heatsink ontop, centering it before you set it down, then just slightly turn it left and right and snap it down.

I like 10/15 oskar if you intend to oc.

tnx for the replies, i'm guessing i insulated my damn chip i put about 4 grainlike drops on it to be able to smear it out nicely with my BC . Better go fix that now...

My Vcore reads 1.52 to 1.55v , is this mobo a known overvolter ?

That sata thing still has me puzzled though , i actually destroyed a fresh windows install just by switching my cables to port 3/4 and rebooting .

I'm doing a fresh install with my hd's on sata 3/4 now , hell it might even fix my norton ghost issue .

I'll keep you updated .

hehehehehe , you know you've used to much goop when you pull the cpu out of the socket removing the heatsink . Damn this has got to be my weakest moment since i started building computers .

Luckely no pins got harmed , well as far as i can see , trying to inspect 754 pins sure gives you a headache :/ .

Funny that i could what angry describes as 'cheatin' in his goopguide , with 1 drop of AS3 and 1 to 2 soft strokes of a cutup bankcard and yet manage to totally . up things cause they added a heatspreader .

Switching to as5 didnt help either , way to thick and sticky imo .

xpr-k, please go here and make the signature so that all know what is in the case. Doing so will make it immeasurably easier to get an assist. I looked at what I presume was raid 0 and ghost problems and just about did not bother to even look for a blurb about someone having ghost working on NVRAID ROM, because I could not tell if you are using raid or not.

Most of this about Ghost is old hat and a dead issue because I posted it within two days of the boards release a half year or so ago.

You can go here and look at the user who reports a command line argument makes Ghost work.

You will see that I reported having 'not' tried it then and still have not done so. I found Paragon Hard Disk Manager to do much more than Ghost by itself and the New Ghost is actually a bought at PowerQuest Drive Image 7 and I do not like it at all.

Beta 9/14 bios for UT250 that seems to bring temp readings closer in line with reality...

You cannot just swap ports on Sata because two are controlled by one chipset mechanism and the other two by another chipset mechanism and that brings about the same scenario as swapping raid controllers has mostly always done. Again I use the phrase raid presuming that is what you are using.

I think that gets about all that I see.

RGone...

PS: just saw the AS5 thing and you ought to try 'ceramique' it locks down goot and tite. HEhehehehehe. Always with a lidded A64 cpu I undo the restraints and wiggle gently side to side the HSF assembly to relax the tension to the lid and the HSF just seems to pop-off then.

About the norton ghost issue , i'm using the ghost2k3.exe on a floppy that i borrowed from a m8 of mine . Perhaps the full windows version does the trick fine.

I reinstalled my HSF with as3 now and a more moderate amount of goop and my BIOS temps have dropped by 4 to 5 ° . CPUid also shows lower temps then my bios 40° vs 45° . 40° seems like a nice enough temp using that silly stock cooler .

I havent tried the 10/15 oscar bios yet , i'm still trying to get a ghost image of some sort before installing/tweaking anything else .

I looked up my stepping and found a similar one doing 2650mhz on air . The only difference is that its 3000+ instead of mine 3200+ , but i figure thats a good thing rite ? My chip getting binned for a higher model number . The guy i bought it from claimed it did 2750mhz with the stock cooler on 1.65Vcore but i'm the cynical type and dont trust any claims in a buy/sell thread =] .
