best of luck to you. we all have to give priority to what is most important in our lives. for you, it seems college is definitely that. When you get older you'll realize there is a happy medium in there somewhere, finding it is always the tough part. I've went through it the last year or so. I love to be with all the people around the forums. I work two jobs, one retail p/t, the other construction 50 plus hours a week. It isn't always easy for us to do what we have to do, but we do it anyhow. best of luck to you Andrew, and when you are ready, I hope to see you playing HL5 :D

so we both said the same thing--he admits he has a problem??

now what who's righter--rofl leave it be

What is computer and video game addiction?

When time spent on the computer, playing video games or cruising the Internet reaches a point that it harms a child's or adult's family and social relationships, or disrupts school or work life, that person may be caught in a cycle of addiction. !!!! Like other addictions, the computer or video game has replaced friends and family as the source of a person's emotional life. !!!! Increasingly, to feel good, the addicted person spends more time playing video games or searching the Internet. Time away from the computer or game causes moodiness or withdrawal.

The first step to healing is to recognize the symptoms. Help from a professional is often needed

Do you risk the loss of a significant relationship, job, or educational or career opportunity because of your on-line use?

Do you stay on line longer than originally intended?

-Does fantasy life on-line replace emotional life with partner.-

other symptoms:

-sleep deprivation or a change in sleep patterns in order to spend time on the net-

a decrease in socializing, resulting in loss of friends

neglecting family and friends

drastic lifestyle changes in order to spend more time on the net

general decrease in physical activity

-Hours playing video games or on the computer increasing, seriously disrupting family, social or even work life.-

Lynne Roberts ([email protected]) described some of the possible physiological correlates of heavy internet usage, ...An "altered state of consciousness" during long periods of dyad/small group interaction (total focus and concentration on the screen, similar to a mediation/trance state mimics other addictions).

For the computer or video game addicted person, a fantasy world on-line or in a game has replaced his or her real world. The virtual reality of the computer or game is more inviting than the every day world of family, school or work. With the increased access to pornography on the Internet and in games, this fantasy world may also be highly sexual.

An overdeveloped sense of importance for the computer in ones life. Defending your right to use the computer as much as desired, regardless of the fact that people in your life are feeling left out and neglected. (denial of the problem and justification; not being able to hear or feel what the other people are saying regarding your computer behavior)

Finding yourself using the computer at times when you are feeling uncomfortable, irritated, or sad about something happening in your life. ( feeling uncomfortable in your relationship, so you will self medicate and "hide out" on the computer) Using time on the computer to become externally focused outside yourself as a way to avoid facing what is happening in your life, and avoiding feeling the appropriate feelings inside yourself. (self medicating)

It's clear that the attempts to define computer and internet addiction draw on these patterns that are perhaps COMMON TO ADDICTIONS OF ALL TYPES - patterns that perhaps point to deeper, universal causes of addiction:

Are you neglecting important things in your life because of this behavior?

Is this behavior disrupting your relationships with important people in your life?

Do important people in your life get annoyed or disappointed with you about this behavior?

Do you get defensive or irritable when people criticize this behavior?

Do you ever feel guilty or anxious about what you are doing?

Have you ever tried to cut down, but were unable to?

If you were honest with yourself, do you feel there is another hidden need that drives this behavior?

People become "addicted" to the internet, or act out pathologically in cyberspace, when they have dissociated it from their life. Their cyberspace activity becomes a world unto itself. They don't talk about it with the people in their life. It becomes a walled-off substitute or escape from their life. Cyberspace almost becomes a dissociated part of their own mind - a sealed-off intrapsychic zone where fantasies and conflicts are acted out. Reality testing is lost. Fixing this dissociation is an implicit or explicit component of many of the techniques for helping internet addicted people.

Best of luck going forward but eventually you'll be able to stop back & enjoy the pc in time you can allot for it.

Fear not, there will come a time when you CAN prioritize your time.

This kind of thing prolly happens to most of us at one time or another. At different levels of addiction.

I had to terminate my cable access a few times to keep the wife from leaving, but I did it.

Don't be sad, dude. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Know in ur heart you'll be stopping back.

Later, man.

:)

Good luck man. It's the only route to go when the problems build up like they have for you.

The sad thing is that I am much in the same situation as you. My college grades haven't exactly been very good lately. I'm always tired as I go to bed very late, sitting on the pc. And on top of that I have insomnia, so I just can't sleep. Because of that I can't consentrate on anything, including school work. I know I need to shape up, because the way it's going now, I might end up failing classes. This year is especially important as it's the last year of college. Next year I'm probably heading for university. I have been addicted like this for 4 years or so, and still I have done okay at school. But this last year has been very hard, and it really requires some efford. So what am I doing about it? I just ordered a new CPU. Yeah, that's how weak I am.

Damn computers :(
