MikeHunt79 Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Ok, I eventually got round to installing a watercooling setup for my rig over the weekend, and tonight I connected it all up and hit the power switch, and nothing.... Well, the motherboard lights come on when I hit the power switch, but the power LED on the front of my case doesn't. Also, nothing appears on the display, and there are no beeps at all. The 3 keyboard LEDS flash when I turn on the PSU, but they don't flash at all after hitting the power button on my case. What I've tried so far. - CMOS reset - Tried various AGP and PCI graphics cards - Disconnected non-essiantials (floppy, hard disks, etc.) But it makes no difference. Have I killed something? Any suggestions at all? I have a spare Barton, a spare infinity and spare ram... are swapping these things a good idea?
cssuk Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 might sound an obvious one but you tried the onboard switch?, also if your psu activates the water pump could be something daft like a loose molex connection or even the wires have come off the switch/board and you put em on back to front i know its easy to panic at times like this i once spent 3 hours trying to figure out what i had broke only to discover i hadnt turned the psu switch back on go on all laugh but it happens
Mott13 Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 He has the infinity so the ob pwr swtch aint an option:) One time I was changing stuff around and somehow my vantec video card cooler shorted on me :0 After that happened i tried to boot but it was a no go... BORKED BIOS chip I had noticed that all the mb lights came on instantly but no power light:( Sound familliar?
Poisonsnak Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Mikehunt I can honestly say 'been there, done that'. My problems were a lot more erratic, but I did run into this one quite often. Check for water damage on the board, and check for physical damage to components. I found that there was some corrosion near the sb and the capacitor near the sb was broken off! I'm not trying to say you're an idiot like me, but I spent a long, long time looking for the solution to this problem. What tipped me off was my motherboard smelled like under the hood of my car (it has a coolant leak). If that doesn't turn up anything, try holding insert while you power on (an alternate cmos clear method), also try the 'long cmos clear' (unhook bat, set jumper, unhook mb power connector, wait 12 hours, reconnect). Since ram is easy to swap I would try that, use something easy like a 256mb or 512mb stick (one only) and try various slots. If you are at your wit's end you might as well swap out the cpu also. Swapping the motherboard would be a royal pain and if the cpu/ram swaps don't do it for you you will know anyway. The PSU sounds ok but if you want while it is on check that the voltages on the lines are all in spec. Do you have the 4-pin power connector hooked up as well? MikeHunt79 Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Ok, I'm at work now, so I won't be able to try and get it going until 6pm-ish GMT. I plug my pump in normally and there are no relays or anything like that to cause any problems. BORKED BIOS chip I had noticed that all the mb lights came on instantly but no power light:( Sound familliar? Very familiar... That one of the wierdest things... I've tried connecting my power LED both ways round, and it doesn't light up at all, while it used to light up fine before. Maybe it's time for my first ever hotflash? I only plumbed it all in over the weekend, and I'm pretty sure there's no leaks. Still, it wouldn't hurt to check. I've already tried the whole holding insert thing, and it didn't make the slightest difference. Since I'm at work now, I've taken my motherboard battery out and it should have a good 8-9hours out of there. I have the 4-pin power connector hooked up, but I'll get a multimeter on the old Tagan when I get home just to be sure that it is giving out the right voltages. I'll be sure to try swapping RAM aswell, I have a few 256MB sticks of hyper-x that have never been overclocked and really reliable. MikeHunt79 Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Ok, I've been experimenting a bit... I tried changing the RAM and CPU, no luck, which leads me to believe it's the motherboard. I must've done something when installing the watercooling... I might've done the waterblock mounting bolts a bit tight or something like that? So, I took everything off the motherboard, and tried it in another case and PSU, and an Aero 7 lite cooler, along with a tested & working CPU and RAM. Now, I hit the power button, and it did the same as before, apart from this time I got long repetitve beeps from the internal speaker. Sooo... It might be a dead BIOS, or even worse, a dead DFI ultra infinity. Anyone know what the beep codes mean, or have any info on hotflashing a BIOS? Finally, I checked for leaks, there are none, and the rails on my Tagan are fine.
Mott13 Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Yep its a dead bios I've never done a hotflash since I have the rd1 so maybe someone else can point you in the right direction... good luck and invest in a bios savior for the future. MikeHunt79 Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Well I've got a working spare ultra infinity, so I might aswell give hotflashing a go... Btw, whats the rd1?
Mott13 Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Oh its the model name for ioss rd1 bios savior:)
MikeHunt79 Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 Ahh, ok. I might invest in one sometime soon. Now... I'm gonna hotflash in around an hour. Now the borked infinity is WAS using the 6/19/04b BIOS... now, would it be a good idea to hotflash this, or should I stick to the 11/27/03 official? MikeHunt79 Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 Ok, I tried hotflashing the BIOS... no joy. Anything else I can try... I think an RMA might be in order. Does it matter that the board is over a year old?
RGone Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 ...I have read the whole post from the beginning and know you put all the watercooling on the board that worked 'before' you did that> it is most likely around the cpu socket that you broke one of the little SMC resistors off. I forget the number of it but there is one I think right lower side of cpu socket and someone used to snag one at the very upper left edge of cpu socket. Take a close look. This obviously is not the fault of the motherboard and you need to inspect very closely for any obvious cracks or broken pieces because they will not repair broken pieces for nothing. You buy extended warranty at the Egg when your purchased or what? Sincerely, RGone...
