syneze Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Hey, I'm building a new machine and was wondering should I go for 1 GIG of RAM or 512? It will be a gaming rig (for HL 2 mostly). Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Propane Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 the more the better
Zurke Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 Depends abit on OS. Win Xp will suck the resource, it is recommended that you have a minumum of 512 for that. On top of the OS you will have memory hungry games. I would go for the most I could get.
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 I would recommend 768mb. I dont think anyone would need more than that (at the moment) I currently have 512mb DDR @332Mhz, I am thinking about getting another stick of
syneze Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 I was going to get a dual channel kit...either 2x256 or 2x512, so I really didn't think of 768.
soke73 Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 (edited) what kind of memory are you lookin for (pc####, brand?) how much are you lookin to spend too? i would go with good, fast, 2 sticks of pc3200 or pc3500(if you can) 512mb instaed of maybe cheaper, lower grade 1024 mb of ram... just to have alot of ram... jus my opionon.. also depends on much you wanna spend... Psywar Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 hrmm.. My personal opinion.. anything more then 512 is just bragging rights.. I think d3 and Linux will back me up on this one.. I run folding.. ive had quake 3 and BF1942 opend all at the same time.. and I barly broke over 275mb of ram useage.. If you going to use Photoshop.. or Imageing tools.. or digital tools.. then yeah.. 1gig is for you but just for gamming... nah its overkill.. braggin rights... Unless you are upgrading to WinXP64 the Min. Sys requirements are going to be 1gb of ram, I do belive I read! Insane..
syneze Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 (edited) I'll be running pc3200 and either Corsair or OCZ w/ CAS2 Money isn't really a prob, I was gonna get 2-2-2. I don't want to get 2x256 and then realize I need more RAM cause if I chuck in a 3rd stick doesn't that disable dual channel? McCrash Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 I would recommend 768 mb too!
NyCUnDaGroUnD Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 512mb is enough already for regular gaming and internet usage. 1 gig of ram is overkill and helps out people doing dv editing, Cad programs and etc. Also Canterwoods love more bandwidth which u can test out in Sisoft Sandra and AMD systems love lower memory timings. MadMan Posted June 2, 2003 Posted June 2, 2003 I htink you should take a look at Mushkin....From what I have seen its the best! If you have the money get Mushkin PC3200 Cas 2-2-2.
cyberpc04 Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 I have 2x512 3200 cas2 memory and in WinXP I only have a little over 800mb free and in games it's less but I still have at least 512 memory free all the time. It is never used unless i'm running a billion things at a time. But when applications or OS's come out that will use it then i'll have it available. I would say the more the better so you don't have to upgrade later! Before you know it there will be apps. and games that will be using more memory.
