Robbiesan Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 (edited) hi all.. I'm new here.. I recently upgraded to an A7N8X mobo, AMD 2600+ stock, 2x 512/3200 Kingston HyperX.. I have it overclocked with case open to 2275MHz @ 12.5x182 vcore 1.75, 49c/34c idle.. nice and stable but it's running too hot with case open so I am planning to spend the money on some good cooling equipment.. here's a list of things I have my eye on.. any advice on this stuff and any recommendations are welcome.. ___________________________________________ Goop Thermagic or Arctic Silver grease (any opinions?) Goop cleaner Goo gone (or maybe isopropyl alcohol?) CPU Cooling Zalman CNPS-7000 CPU Cooler Frostytech review - since it has a 110mm heatsink diameter I am wondering if it will fit okay in the case.. anyone tried one on an A7N8X with minitower case? - I am also thinking about the Thermalright SLK-800 copper heatsink.. any recommendations on a series of good quiet fans (70-80mm)? This setup from Thermaltake caught my eye.. anyone have hands on with this? Thermaltake Subzero4G N/Sbridge Cooling Vantec Iceberg Chipset Cooler CCB-A1C (other recommendations?) Vantec Iceberg Cool Cases Thermaltake V1000A Case (but they're all sweet) Thermaltake XaserIII V1000A All Thermaltake Xaser III cases Power Supplies Thermaltake Silent Purepower PS Thermaltake Silent Purepower PS - I'm tending towards this one since it supplies max 18A (+12v) and 30A (+3.3v) compared to the Zalman ZM400A at 15A and 28A respectively.. guinness Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Arctic Silver is great, but Shin Etsu is much better (from what i've read) here are the benches. For the cleaner...I'm not sure, curious my self cuz I need to clean my processor.. For the heatsink the slk-800s are good and a panaflo at 40 CFM @ 32 dB isnt bad. With the northbridge cooler, if you like the iceberqs go with the new ones. As for the case...I dont like the xasers because they are branded...kinda pisses me off and the colors aren't great. I'm getting a cheiftec and modding it myself instead. Power supplies...hmm I think im gonna get the premodded one from voyeur mods...i dont feel like risking my life... just my two cents. id buy this stuff either from jab-tech.com or Performance-pcs.com. I like performance-pcs because they sleeve everything you buy from them and there is no extra charge and you pick the colors...very cool. mxrider623 Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 the SLK series don't fit on the A7N8X but they are the best coolers out there when matched up with a Vantec tornado fan.
guinness Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 mx i think you may be wrong...ive heard the slk800s fit on the a7n8xs but the 900s dont
mxrider623 Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 Yeah your right the 800 can fit on there with ease. get that and a Vantec Tornado fan which moves almost 85CFM of air.
TypicalSloan Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 as for cleaning thermal paste off the cpu i use isopropal (spelling may be off) alcohol, that u can get at a drug store. It takes the as3 off quickly.
guinness Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 (edited) i gotta do that and lap my procesooor should i clean around the proc or just the die? Edited May 25, 2003 by guinness
TypicalSloan Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 well if u get as3 or whatever u use on the processor than yes u can use the alcohol to wipe it off. Some people like to use q-tips. I think u can use whatever u want as long as its lint and static free.

TheEclypse Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 that thermaltake subzero4g looks interesting to me , the temperatures arent to bad, and it wont take up as much space as water cooling.
TypicalSloan Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 should i wipe around the die?? u should only need to wipe around the die if there is artic silver 3 on the chip, just make sure u get all the as3 and youll be fine.
gouber5585 Posted May 25, 2003 Posted May 25, 2003 (edited) I used artic silver 3, and it works great. I bought goo off and isopropyl alcohol and acetone to make sure i got it nice and clean. I recommend reading arctic silver 3 website for instructions on what to use. That's what I did. Don't forget to get some razor blades to put on a smooth coat of arctic silver. And don't worry about the temperatures for at least 72 hours cause it has to "burn in". Also, go for the vantec tornado fans, but be warned these things are really loud, especially the 92mm one. I just bought 2 80mm's and 1 92mm one and i took them out cause I was afraid the neighbors below would call the police for noise in the night (I live in a condo). These things sound like vaccuums. But they blow more air than my stand up revolving regular fan does. So if you don't mind the noise, then get those fans. I bought mine really cheap at www.bestbyte.com That's my advice and experience Edited May 25, 2003 by gouber
