Cold Vein Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Hey, My DFI LANParty UT 250Gb will not POST @ 2-2-2, it seems to be reading the SPD as 2-3-2, as it initially POSTs at those timings. Manually changing them to 2-2-2 results in me having to clear the CMOS to get the system to POST. Is this a common problem fixed with a new BIOS? I am running the initial release BIOS at the moment, the new one which has recently surfaced on DFI's site bears no mention of any fixes regarding RAM compatibility. In fact, as I understand it OCZ EL is recommended by DFI for this motherboard according to a link from this site. I have had my fair share of horror stories ragarding Beta BIOS releases so I am wary to try one without knowing for sure that it contains a fix. Anyone have any ideas? Specs: 3400+ Newcastle @ stock Thermalright XP-120 w/ 120mm YS-Tech Fan 1GB OCZ EL Platinum Rev.2 Leadtek GeForce 6800 GT @ 410/1111 2 x 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 SATA - RAID 0 Array Sony CD-RW Sony DVD-RW FDD Another thing: my temps seem to be very high; the CPU idles @ 50C. I find this strange as the exact same CPU idled @ 40C on my MSI K8N Neo Platinum with an inferior heatsink/fan assembly. Also; this very same RAM in question operates perfectly @ 2-2-2-11 in my ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe. Thanks you in advance for your assistance. noneother Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 I have my 2x512 corsair XLPT running at 225 with 2-2-2-10 no sweat.. my limit is the 3000+ newcastle that I can't get windows to boot over 2300... see the thread (sticky) regarding temps... after being off all day, my cpu boots to 55 degrees... immediately.. something fishy there I am thinking
jess1313 Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 hummm.... well the first thing i suggest you try is... 1. Try each stick individually, it is possible, that you have reseved a bad stick........ what slots are you using your ram in? 2. i would try slots 1&2, and 1&3. have you messed with any off the other timings? 3. try setting Dram Drive strength to level 1. what Vdimm are you at? 4. try 2.7 and 2.8vdimm For your temp readings.... this is a known issue with the stock bios, here is a download list of all the bioses http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...=&threadid=2073 all are betas(exept the OEM one, of corse) so use at your own risk.... no one has had any flash problems, so far, and many are using them GL -Jess-
Cold Vein Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 Thanks for your replies, 1. Try each stick individually, it is possible, that you have reseved a bad stick........ Yeah I guess I could try this, but they both work fine in my ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe so i figured they were good. what slots are you using your ram in? 1+2, I will try 1+3. have you messed with any off the other timings? I put tRAS @ 10, but it POSTs @ 2-3-2-5 with all timings on auto. 3. try setting Dram Drive strength to level 1. OK I'll try that. what Vdimm are you at? 2.8 -------------- I am running the RAM in question in my A7N8X Deluxe rig at the moment (@ 2-2-2-11 without problems). It's 1:22am here so I will try the things you mentioned on the DFI tomorrow. Thanks again
jess1313 Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 ok i feel that the drive strength, and or the slots, might help:D GL -Jess-
Popcicle Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 When using the AUTO setting it's going to post according to the SPD values programmed on that given memory. We can't compare what Asus or others will play with as their memory department (settings) are completely deferent in BIOS. I'd give one of the OCZ Tech guys a PM on this one. Tony or bigtoe. Pops. scyphe Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 I'd go with 2-3-2 since timings aren't that important like on earlier platforms. It may just be your RAM that can't cope.. Or voltage is too low... and when it comes to new bios'es, 10/05 and 10/15 worked very good for me. Stock BIOS was crap. Get Oscars 10/05 or 10/15 releases. Or if you can find it, the september release. The stock bios's tempreading is way off, and turning off Thermal Throttle will make the board unable to post. Cold Vein Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 Sorry I haven't answered, I had to go away on business suddenly. But anyway, I got back yesterday and flashed the to 10/15 BIOS and fixed my temperature readings. I installed the OCZ Platinum Revision 2 and changed the DRAM Drive Strength to 1 and manually set the timings to 2-2-2-10. The system booted no problem and everything is fine so far. I don't know if it was the new BIOS or the Drive Strength that done it. Either way, many thanks to all who replied.
