svrz Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Hello everyone This post may venture a bit into the OT territory but since quite a lot of posters have a similar setup as I do, I thought it would be appropiate to ask this question here. My hardware profile is in my sig. Whenever I run Prime95, after 3-5 minutes, the screen becomes garbled. The machine itself does not crash. The CPU temps hit 59 C max (I will participate in the survey). I know this from logging on to my machine from another PC and observing the SmartGuardian readings. Is this a symptom of PSU being overloaded? I noticed a few people are running 9800 Pro with 350 PSUs. Hence I will be very interested to know if they are experiencing the same type of problem. Thanks very much in advance.
TobyWong Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 The 9800's are pretty decent as far as power consumption goes but looking at the rest of your specs you are *really* pushing it for a 350watt unit, even a fortron. Do you see these same artifacts under other load conditions (such as in a game where CPU + GPU + HD are all going at once)? svrz Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Hi Toby Thanks for the reply. I have not played any games on this machine as of yet. I just built it. However, I think you are right. When Prime95 starts, the +12v reading on SmartGuardian shows 9.xx. So I think I need to invest in a 400 W PS. Thanks and take care. Guest culinist Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Yes that would concern me too.If you have a muli meter you should check those rails first just to be sure, but I don't think that even smartguardian would be that far off. Ubermann Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Maybe you forgot to connect the little 4 pin beside the cpu ?

Ubermann Meet a class A moron: me. ) Yes, for some reason, I had forgotten to do that. Now there is no drop in +12v railing and there is no garbling of the screen when Prime95 runs. Thank you very, very much. Now I must go buy a dunce hat!!!!
TobyWong Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 hehe glad you got it sorted out, nothing worse than spending cash for no reason...
Ubermann Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Your not alone, there is lots of ppl that forget that 4pin. Most of them RMA the board, and say DFI is crap. But DFI is gooood =)
unixadm Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Glad you got it fixed. I started reading the thread at the top and thought - 4 pin ATX+12 connector. Sure enough. Voltage always helps!
