MikeHunt79 Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 Ok, I went for it and got another motherboard... I can use one as a burnin mule and bios hotflash'er and the other as my main OC'ing rig, which I plan to do Mod (vDimm). Now I need to know which one will be the best OC'er... I have some single sided BH-5 that will do memtest at 260Mhz, but I've never managed to get my current board up to boot windows at 250FSB and windows keeps getting corrupted. I have yet to test my new (second hand) board, but the previous owner claims that he had it running at 250 stable. Now, is it just a case if seeing which board OC's the best FSB wise, or are there other factors to consider such as Vcore stability? curious Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 You should of course test FSB. Lower the multiplier of your CPU, so that it's not in your way (i.e. 6x). Then you should flash the same oc-friendly BIOS on both boards. I recommend Hellfire's 3EG Rev. 3. Unplug and disable all not needed components in your testing rig and boot a clean windows (or whatever OS you use) with only the necessary drivers and programs for testing. Only use one RAM stick at a time (should give higher FSB if the mobob can take it). Best would be to not screw the mobo into the case, so that you can easily switch the boards. Aim a large household fan (~10 inch) at your board and RAM-sticks, so that they get properly cooled (if you don't use northbridge water-cooling). Then compare the boards to each other by giving 1,9V to the NB and 3,3V to the RAM. If the boards behave much differently, you might use different BIOS versions to see which one fits best to each mobo. Follow the guidelines posted in this forum when ocing and flashing BIOS. nebuchanezzar Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 J ust what he said. Use the same hardware on each one to test them against each other but don't be surprised if you need to use a different stick or in different slots or a different chipset voltage for each to achieve your results. Good luck:cool:
MikeHunt79 Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 Looks like there are gonna be a lot of variables here. I'm gonna have to do some pretty intensive testing... TBH, I'll be happy with whatever board does 250FSB reliably... Even better if I can get dual channel at that speed. The most I've got so far is 235FSB, and that was with CH-5 ram. I forgot to mention, I'm going to be going for water on my OC'ing rig, so I reackon I'm gonna push the Vcore above 1.85v. My water setup will be a LRWW and a Eheim 1250 and a huge rad. I'm tempted to test each boards Vcore stability at higher voltages, since I've heard some stories of fluctuations above 1.85v... But if this can be fixed with a mod or some sinking of chips then I guess it's not too much of an issue. Finally, slightly OT, I've noticed people here are upping there AGP voltage... Does this increase stability? Won't it kill the GFX card?
lordbane Posted October 19, 2004 Posted October 19, 2004 My old Radeon 9500 PRO and my current GeForce 6800 GT handled 1.7-1.8v AGP with no problems, and it improved stability. If you're worried, try 1.6v. Just don't leave it on AUTO. I had some problems with that setting.
