jagt Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Hello again guys! Well, I'm looking for a new CPU at the moment, as I'm growing a bit tired of my newcastle. So, I'm looking at a mobile 3200+ 1MB CG 62W (AMN3200BIX5AR) Is this any good? Should I look for a DTR instead? What is really the difference between ordinary mobiles and DTR's? I'm using a swiftech mcx 6400-v, which I think I should be able to use with a CPU without heatspreader. It's screwed on with spring loaded screws, so it should be okay. Thanks. New-B Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Mobile will have 1.4v operating voltage compared to the DTR's 1.5v (I think, basically a DTR is a mobile that couldn't hack it at 1.4v).
Samurai Jack Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I would try to get the DTR, the mobiles are fine but the DTR seems to be a better clocker in most cases. The DTR is made to run in a laptop, but still has 1.5v instead of 1.4v. Because of this it seems to be able to take the heat better. Maybe AMD made it better because it had to run in a more extreem enviroment(alot of heat). But I have mobile,DTR, & two desktops. The DTR does better than any of the others, much higher clocks & better stability. There is aways a CPU here & there that doesnt follow the norm tho. jagt Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Ah, okay. Well, as it is now, I can't find any DTR's in stock anywhere in Scandinavia at the moment. I've mailed some webshops and asked if there's a possibility that they get them in. But as it is now, mobiles in different flavours - Including 3400+ claw CG 62w, is the best I can get hold of. So I probably will end up getting a pure mobile. I of course know that results variates from chip to chip, but on a general note, how far can I expect a 3200 mobile to go? I haven't seen too many results from them really. Surely they are generally better than desktops? Thanks. Experience, input, or anything else is much appreciated
Samurai Jack Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Yes I will have to agree, they probably are better than desktops. The mobile seem to be able to go 2400/2550 on good air, the one I have hits a wall at 2530 & will only run stable at 2480, this on a soso heatsink. As long as you get a Clawhammer & stay 3200 up you should be alright. One thing seem so is the newer the steping the better the OC. All my CPUs are 3200, the DTR will go 2560 stable & I can get to desktop & test/benchmark at 2640. I can even get to desktop at 2750 but no test will run. The mobile will not make it to desktop above 2530. But better cooling could change all that to. There is some xtreem mobiles out there even breaking 3g. jagt Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Great, thanks. Well, I recon the stepping should be fairly new, since they haven't gotten them in stock yet. They should be within some weeks, so that's okay. Probably will wait some days till some others have gotten some chips from the same shop, to get steppings and results. The 3400+ looks damn tempting, but it's a bit too expensive for me right now. To be honest I would be perfectly happy with 2.5GHz. My newcastle hits roughly 2.55GHz, which isn't exactly exceptional...
jagt Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Oh yeah, and how thick is the heatspreader? Need to know about how much thinner the mobiles/dtr's are than the desktops. I probably have to grind down some metal tube thingies on my swiftech to make sure there is proper contact.
THunDA Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Hey jagt.. Who needs a heat sink when you have a 200cfm fan..hehe I knew you'd be getting another cpu .. just cant resist can you..
jagt Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Hahah, and I know you can't resist the a64 lane much longer ....... Oh that shiny UT..... you know you dream of it....

jagt Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Ah, that thin. Well, then it shouldn't be a problem getting a cpu without it to fit properly under my mcx6400v. Might not have to grind anything in fact
