470hpGS400 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Wish this board was free. That way I would not be so frustrated with this (*&^*&^%^& thing. Sorry to start my first post on a negative, but DFI left me with no option. A64 3000 and A64 3200 9800 Pro 128mb video card, tried 2 NVidia video cards as well XP Pro 2xSeagate 160gb SATA HD in Raid 0 Problem Freezes on Windows boot screen. Nothng happens. Tried Safe mode. Same issue. Tried the helpful hints found on this forum (thank you) such as AGP fast writes, sidebanding, AGP voltage 1.8, swapped memory, etc.... Nothing. So here I have a nice looking computer that stays on the XP load screen. I am thinking I should return this unit for full credit and purchase another manufacturer. This board has some obvious problems and with DFI trying to keep up with supply, plenty of bad ones appear to be hitting the market. Anybody have any other suggestions before I RMA? thank you in advance
TobyWong Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Is this a fresh install of XP or an install done on a different motherboard?
470hpGS400 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 thank you. Tried that several times to no avail. Still same problem.
Samurai Jack Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Did you try a freash install without raid 0, just use one drive only. This has happened to me. Which bios you using, there could also be bios settings not set for the system yet. Are these mobile or desktop CPUs you are using. CG/CG & AR/AX. This dont sound like a board problem, maybe a hardware issue. SJ
470hpGS400 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Using desktop AMD cpu's. If the only way this thing works is without Raid ), then I will just go back to my Abit NF-7s mb. I have 3 of those in the house along with an Epox based system. I am going to try to flash the bios to a beta bios and see
Samurai Jack Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 It is not the only way it will work, but there is some problems getting it installed for some. Going with one drive can verify if this is the problem. This is what needs to be done to fix what is going on, seperate the does & dont with your setup & OS. Without doing so your chances of finding the problem is limited. W2K and some of the XPs need help to get installed, & then it has to be installed just right. But if you dont have the patience to explore the issue's you are having then maybe a diff board would fit your needs better. 470hpGS400 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 It is not about the patience. It is about time. I have 6 computers total in this house and usually update one a month for something, so I understand computers abit. Had one since the Commodore days. This board is finicky unlike the last Abit,Asus, and Epox boards I have had. Reminds me of an old Asus board I had years back that was garbage. Not yet calling this one garbage. Just finicky. Computers. Computers..... HOWEVER!!!!!! I did get it. I disconnected the other cd-rom and everything is working fine. I almost always install barebone, not sure why I connected 2 drives. Not sure if the drive is bad or incompatible. Does not matter much as this is my game machine and I use another for copying. Will explore that in time. Right now I need to load everything in and run some bench's. Now I just need to figure out why I get artifacts when I connect my peltier to my video card all of a sudden. Never occurred before. thank guys
mtfresh Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I have the same problem where the system will boot and when it comes time for the winxp boot screen to appear with the moving line it goes all black and just stays like that until I have to hold in the power button for 5 secs to shutdown. When I restart it sometimes will work and sometimes it won't. Usually it will always go on the 3rd attempt. I just find it strange as to why this is happening in the first place? I have a Seagate 200gb connected as Master on the Primary and a WD se 40gb Master and a BenQ 822a slave on the secondary ide. 470hpGS400 Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I would just diconnect everything except the essentials. One HD and one CD unit. I am sure it will get fixed in the 4th or 5th BIOS update.
Samurai Jack Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 LOL, I understand the time. I dont know if you have had a64s before but it is kinda there way. Thinks have changed & gotin more involved than ever. Artifacts - I have seen many things affect vid cards on this board. AGP voltage, seems to need set higher on some, 1.7 up. I am running 1.8v. The Chipset voltage will affect vid card performance. 1.9v on mine but I have better cooling than stock. I have seen some tho that wouldnt run on anything but 1.6v. Ram timings, even if stable before. With the on board mem controller I have had some strange things go on. LDT multiplier - Try 3x, unless your over 250 HTT then go 2.5x. I know some of these things dont seem like they would effect the vid card but as I said I have seen some strang things with a64s. They just are so diff than our old AXP systems its just crazy. Keep working at it & dont rule out something you think would not be the way. Just one instance, I was having studding problem with vidio. I ajusted LDT multiplier & changed some timings on my ram & it was fixed (This thing passed prime 24 hours & memtest with no problem). I also had garbled vid at boot up & changed AGP voltage that fixed it.(it worked before but after some other changes I got into this) The fine line that some of our hardware will need for stability has gotin smaller with the new mobo's. Just when you think you have tried something to find it did not work you will change something else that will make that very thing work. If you dont figure it out post back with all that you tried. Oh BTW. your user name. The badest Buick ever built, well old school anyway. Turbo's have taking us a long way & harder to tune also heheheheh......... fsh42na Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I don't know about SATA drives, but my 250gb had fits with my PATA Seagate drive. If it was connected in any way (master or slave), XP wouldn't install without a whole s..load of error messages ( cdrom, disk drive and battery installer error). Once I took out the Seagate and just used a Maxtor PATA, all was good. I eventually got a pair of WD SATA drives and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Hope this helps.
Angry_Games Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 everyone is learning the new systems still, even RGone and I. A64's aren't AthlonXP/Pentium4 style chips. The chipsets are a bit different since the cpu holds the memory controller. do yourself a favor and read the important info sticky, especially the third post about a signature with your specs in it. That will help us help you more than any anger and frustration you post will.
