Problem with NFII Ultra Rev.A

Recommended Posts

Well, this is my third one of these motherboards, which should tell you that I really want to get this to work. I bought a used mobo off of ebay after killing my first one in a watercooling incedent. THe mobo wouldn't boot and the diagnostic leds indicated that the mobo was checking the CMOS batter and checksum. After messing with the bnoard for a while I gave and bought a new one from Monarch Computers. I got the motherboard in, set everything up... and I get the same problem. I'm using 512Mb of Corsair DDR433 RAM and an AthlonXP 2500+. Anyone have any suggestions beyond sending it back?

Sorry about that, was just about to leave for work and was getting one last post off beforehand. All of my specs are in my sig, but here you go anyways.

AthlonXP 2500+(Mobile Barton) Watercooled

DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra (Rev. A)

On board Sound

512Mb (2x256) Corsair XMS DDR433 RAM (2-2-2-5 T1)

ATi Radeon 9700 Pro

Two Western Digital WD400s(40Gb, PATA) in RAID

350w Sparkle PSU

Right now I don't know what version BIOS I have because I haven't been able to get that far

As before I tried to boot the PC and all I get is the last diagnostic LED staying lit (meaning the board is checking the CMOS battery and checksum). Obviously the system doesn't POST and I get no beeps whatsoever out of the board. I have checked to make sure everything is seated correctly and checked both jumpers on the board. I have also exchanged the CMOS battery with a known good battery and tried booting without a battery as well. I think that's jsut about everything, so if anyone has any idea about what to do, please help.

*bump*

Just had a thought, could the system not be booting because of the processor? I had the exact same motherboard before and everything worked fine. The only difference in the system was that the CPU wasn't a mobile chip, it was just the normal desktop Barton.

So.... if I understand you correctly, you haven't gotten anything to work since your 'watercooling incident'. Have you checked out all the other parts in your system to make sure nothing else was damaged?

I would definitely try a different cpu..... or at least try yours in another mobo to make sure it's not the problem.

Have you gotten to the bios on your system? You have timings listed for your ram which makes me think you have. I don't know much about your ram but I know my system doesn't boot with timings that tight.

It doesn't surprise me that a mobo bought on ebay doesn't boot. Sadly... it only sorta surprises me that a new one won't boot. But when you put the two together it makes me think your problem is somewhere else. I'd suggest swapping parts in/out and see if anything makes a difference. It would suck to go through the whole RMA thing only to find your problem is elsewhere.

I tried the RAM in another one of my systems and ran memtest on it and it all checked out. I just have the stock timings listed (which now that I look at them, I put the wrong ones up there, was thinking of the new XL at the time. Stock timings are 2-3-3-7). I've also replaced the video card with a Voodoo2 I had lying around to play Tribes on. I've also tried disconnecting all of my optical devices and hard drives, but it still hasn't changed anything. I have an MSI mobo in my closet somewhere that I'll dig out to make sure it's not the CPU. Do you think I should hook up the whole system to the other mobo or jsut enough to see if I can make it to the BIOS?

It's up to you. I'd probably start with the minimum necessary and then add stuff..... just to make sure everything is ok. I guess the main thing to check is that the 'basics' work in another mobo. Then put the same stuff into the LP and see if it works.

Well, I don't know now. Put just the basics in my MSI mobo (CPU, RAM, and Vid Card) and same thing. Nothing out of the onboard speaker, no video, nothing. I don't know how the CPU could be bad. Looking it over, the core appears to be in excellent condition. Well, guess it's time to wait for another paycheck so I can grab another processor and see if that's really the problem....
