jaz Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Well, i finally decided to order another video card and run them in sli. I bought my mobo just for that purpose, and it seems the time has come. I got it for about 1/2 price i paid when i used evga's step-up program to get my 1st card. This is so cool. I'm really excited about it. I really like these cards, and 2 of them ought to be awesome performers with my new 22" sammy lcd. Now I won't have to worry about performance issues with future games like far cry 2, and equally resource demanding games. My cpu is just enough to feed these 2 babies, and 2gb of ram is fine for future games, especially now that i got 1 gb of video ram, and i increased my membit bus to 512. Glad i got this Asus board when i built this pc around a year ago. And i made sure i had a psu that could handle 2 cards. (2-6 pin pci-e connectors, and mobo has 2 pci-e X16 slots. Everything is sli ready, including me!

jaz Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Well, i had an unexpected visitor today. After i read my email, which contained a tracking # for my 2nd gts 512, i read it's out for delivery! So i look on my back porch and what do i see? My new toy! Newegg freakin' rocks big time! 2 day delivery!! I just ordered it yesterday morning! I paid an extra $3 for rush handling, and it got through proccesing before 12 noon, so it flew to my house. I am running it now. I ran a demo of aquamark, and it was over before i knew it...it flew right through it like a vinyl 33 on 78rpm's....lol. I also had to get latest audigy drivers cuz i had to move my sound card to last pci slot and get rid of the nic i used cuz i had trouble setting up onboard lan for some reason. This time i did it in about 2 minutes. I don't remember why i had such a hard time before. I visited nvidea's website for sli supported games, so i can keep up to date with that, and will do some more reading to get the most out of this. Amazing, That's all i can say about it. What a day...i feel like a kid on his birthday! :thumbs-up:
hardnrg Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 note that if some games don't have an SLI profile, rather than make one yourself, you can get the best SLI performance by renaming the game .exe... e.g. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 uses Unreal Engine so: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2\Binaries\R6Vegas2_Game.exe rename to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2\Binaries\UTGame.exe and then change the shortcut (on desktop, start menu) from ...\R6Vegas2_Launcher.exe to ...\UTGame.exe this also applies to R6 Vegas 1 amongst other games if rename fixes don't exist, usually creating a profile to force AFR2 works the best
jaz Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 (edited) That's awesome Hardnrg! I didn't know that was possible! Boy, i have a whole new world to study up on now. I guess there's a lot more to sli than i thought. Muchous gracious! Edit; Were did you get the 177.35 drivers. i take it they are nvidia? I'm using the 75.16 from evga site. Nevermind...i see they are for the new cards. Edited June 19, 2008 by jaz

I have the last game, Perseus Mandate, and it's not on Nvidia's list. Is there some web site that has these hacks for all or most games, Hardnrg? Or am i misunderstanding you...all i have to do is add \Game.exe? Don't i have to include some letters to indicate what game engine it is? I wouldn't know what to put in for fear...monolith or sierra, and what letters axactly? Gotta be a site for this... :-) Edited June 19, 2008 by jaz
hardnrg Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 take a look in the nvidia control panel > Manage 3D settings > Program settings I can see F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate there if you can't, get new drivers
jaz Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) take a look in the nvidia control panel > Manage 3D settings > Program settings I can see F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate there if you can't, get new drivers I looked in the CP, and i had to uncheck *show only programs found on this computer, then i saw a huge list of games, with prseus mandate being one of them, but the screen looks different than the one on nvidia's site, where it shows you how to the same thing you are telling me, and when i click the "add" button, a new windows screen pops up and wants me to type in something, I've tried all different kinds of things, but it doesn't allow "characters", only letters or numbers, and it doesn't get added to the list. I have the latest drivers for my card, 75.16, from evga's site (also on nvidia's site.) So i manually went through and clicked on all the settings that had the little nvidia icon on it and clicked apply. That is my only option. I think the screen that i see from the directions from nividia's website, (same as yours) is a pic of vista nvidia CP. I have winxp home sp3. That's all i can think of. Am I right? Did these setting take hold? Because after i selected most of the settings, the "restore button bacame operational. It was kinda greyed out and not click-able before. Or do i have to have the game installed? I tried adding a program from the list of stuff in my computer, but i get that windows screen again. hardnrg Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 if the game is already in the list, it has an SLI profile... almost all the time this means SLI is supported... nVidia control panel > 3D Settings > Show SLI Visual Indicators (enable) if you see a green SLI bar in 3D games, SLI is working... if not, it's not
Waco Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 2 more GB of RAM would help you avoid slowdowns associated with virtual memory.

Nevermind...i got to see it when i ran aquamark. Getting the feel of sli a bit more. Thanks. Thewacokid; "2 more GB of RAM would help you avoid slowdowns associated with virtual memory." I have 1gb of video memory, a 512bit membus, plus the 2gb sticks of mushkin. I'm not gonna need any more than that...why would virtual memory have to be accessed with all this? Or are you just messin' wit' me? Or you jes' showin'off cuz you gots 4gb...lol. Kinda hard to tell online. Hmmm...can winxp support 4gb of ram? or is that a vista thing?
