Want To Buy Some New Ram For Dfi Lanparty Sli-dr

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've been a DFI lanparty SLI-dr user for 3 years or more now. My PC is still doing well (after a dual core upgrade and new GPU). It's getting to the time though where I want to put the best RAM I can get in it and maybe try and get an FX60 so it's completely maxed out (as next year I'm moving to an Imac for work reasons and it's getting harder and harder to find upgrades for this PC).

Anyway, I've found two options for replacing my 2 1GB Hynix PC3200 DDR400 (currently running at 236fsb and 2, 4, 4, 10).

My PC is at 2.6GHz somewhat stable with a AMD X2 4200. The only problem I have in terms of stability is Call Of Duty 4 just seems to not like my PC, everything else is great. But I'd like to push some more speed out of my PC.

The two options are:

2Gb G.Skill ZX Series DDR PC3200 (DDR400) 2-3-2-5 Dual Channel kit

A review states they got it to 240fsb at 2.5-3-2-7

or

2Gb Mushkin DDR HP3200 (PC3200) 2-3-2 Dual Channel kit

Which of these two is best for overclocing on the DFI Lanparty Sli-DR. I know RAM is a bit iffy with this board (it's taken me a LONG time to be able to even overclock my PC stably with my Hynix sticks).

My other question is can the Lanparty SLi-DR use 4GB of Ram? Or does it limit speed if 4GB is used, if so can this be overcome by upping the FSB ratio etc etc.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you've got a digital camera, take pictures of the Genie BIOS and DRAM Config pages (top and bottom of each page) and it will probably be possible to get your overclock higher and stable in everything including COD4...

I currently run my X2 3800+ @ 9x303=2728 with 2x1GB GSkill HZ @ 166 divider = ~248, 3-4-4-8-1T

before this I have run:

Opteron 170 @ 9x315=2835, 2x1GB GSkill HZ @ 166 = ~257, 3-4-4-8-1T

Opteron 148 @ 10x305=3050, 2x512MB GSkill LE @ 200 = ~305, 2.5-4-4-8-1T

Opteron 146 @ 10x306=3060, 2x512MB GSkill LE @ 166 = ~255, 2.5-3-3-7-1T

Opteron 146 @ 10x307=3070, 2x512MB GSkill LE @ 166 = ~256, 2.5-3-3-7-1T

A64 3500+ @ 10x292=2920, 2x512MB GSkill LE @ 200 = ~292, 2.5-4-3-7-1T

So the DFI NF4 boards are capable of running CPUs and RAM at the highest speeds for 939

You've come to the right place as DFI-Street and OCC members both have a lot of experience with these boards :)

What CPU cooling are you using?

Do you have all four motherboard power headers connected?

Sorry totally forgot to say what cooling I have for the CPU.

It's a Zalman 7000cu. I get temperatures of around 43-44c idle up to 47-48 under heavy load (50 on hot days).

I have all four power points connected I'm sure (I remember the hidden away one), but will double check later tonight.

I think you're better off with the dual core cpu vs the fx60.

There will probably only be very little to gain by changing the type of your ram. edit: And depending on what you do on the pc, probably little to gain by adding more than 2gb (assuming you use xp)

I guess you've got a 175 or X2 4200/4400 ?

Try the following settings... some of your current settings seem a lot off what has worked for me with different RAM and CPUs, notably the preamble should be 5.0ns for 200 divider, and 6.5ns for 166 divider, that's a massive impact on stability having it way up at 9ns... Anyway, the following settings should be stable at 2.6GHz with the ram at ~217, 2.5-4-4-8-1T... try it out in COD4, it *should* be stable now... obviously I'm just suggesting values that will almost certainly be stable, but there's no guarantee as I'm guessing for the Hynix RAM

If these settings are stable, you can try increasing the FSB up... you might have to increase the CPU VID Control slightly... I've suggested a modest setting here that you can increase while minding your temps...

I chose the 166 divider because that has worked well with 6.5ns preamble for several different sticks of RAM, especially if it can't run as fast as the FSB... the 10x multi has worked better than 11x for me for my Opteron 148 and 3500+... if 240 on the RAM is attainable, the 166 divider with CPU multi at 10x means the CPU speed can be 2880MHz, and the RAM gets divided by /12 to give 240MHz... 2.88GHz is a reasonable expected maximum OC for a dual core 939... a good start anyway :)

I'd go with the Samsung UCCC based RAM...

the 2 x 1GB sets will often to 260+ stable... sometimes upto 270+ stable...

run it on a 5/6 divider and you can do easily 300+ x 9 for a 2.7GHz+ overclock.

with these boards FORGET about tight timings... it means NOTHING... Angry Games proved that conclusively... just max out your bandwidth and forget the timings...

I had my 2 x 512MB TCCD running at 334x9= 3.0GHz on a 9/10 divider... it was crazy bandwidth...

I also had my 2 x 1GB UCCC running 334x9= 3.0GHz running on a 5/6 divider... timings were loose, bandwidth was awesome...

my best recommendation would be going with Samsung UCCC based RAM, GSkill and OCZ and others have good offerings of those.

go with either a 2x1GB or 4x1GB setup... 4 gigs may reduce you bandwidth some but for COD4 you'll probably get better overall performance.

good luck

you can almost forget about the RAM speed too... performance difference for me between 304 MHz @ 2.5-4-4-8-1T and 255 MHz @ 2.5-3-3-7-1T were only just measurable in any benchmark...

overclock the CPU as high as you can get it, it makes up like 90% of the CPU/RAM/Motherboard performance... then just get the RAM somewhere respectable... you can be really lazy with the RAM as it hardly matters at all as long as it's stable

I'm afraid with these settings I couldn't get the PC to get to 'Updating the CMOS' (just before OS load)

Is there a BIOS that I should use particularly (I think I'm using the NF4Ld406 Bios)

I have a X2 4200 btw.

oh, lol...

well, you should download (and ideally print out) the Definitive DFI AMD Overclocking Guide

then go grab Tmods BIOS CD or google: lejabeach dfi nf4, and look for the 623-3, 623-1, 704-2bta BIOS downloads...

as for the settings not working, here are some settings you can try experimenting with (change one at a time and see the resulting difference)

Hi There, Sorry for the late reply. Will test these new settings tonight.

I seem to remember the I've always had problems getting my system to post using the 166 RAM divider.

I got Tmod's CD and will try one of the BIOS's you stated. I was wondering, what is the Merlin Taipan BIOS range like? They seem to be quite recent.

Gskill's Pc4000 stuffs, the HZ 1 gig sticks (2gig dual channel kits), I had three sets, sold two, still have one set left that is paired up with my 165 opty DFI NF4 setup (kinda retired setup)> they all ran up to 290 (not totally stable, but.....), they ran nicely on stock volts (2.5) in the 260 to 275mhz range, 1T and real solid.....I always had good luck with the 704-2bta bios, very friendly with mems...

you can find them ocassionally on Ebay....I am debating on mine, might part out the old system...

laterzzz............
