SnooSnooKachu Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Hi, I have an EVGA 780i motherboard and recently my computer has been acting up. There are times when it won't start up, but after unplugging and replugging things into my power supply it starts working again, but the bios went into "safe mode" and reset itself. When I went into the bios, it autodetected my processor to run at 1.6GHz, but since it's an e6600, it is supposed to run at 2.4GHz. I checked the multiplier and it was at 5, so I set it to 9 like it is supposed to be. When I did, it said that the expected new clock was supposed to be at about 2.533GHz. My FSB is at 266.5 x 4 MHz and 266.5 * 9 = about 2400, so I wonder why the math is wrong. When I restarted my computer with the x 9 multiplier, it registered at 2.4GHz like it is supposed to be at. Also, the vcore voltage is set to 1.325V or something like that in the bios, but speedfan tells me it is varying between 1.27V and 1.28V. Anyone have a clue? damian Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Is the BIOS running any "energy saving" software, also try clearing the CMOS it should return everything to stock.
SnooSnooKachu Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 I reset the cmos when I was trying to get everything working. I forgot to check to see if the default settings enable power saving, good catch damian. I'll check that out if my computer decides to behave for a second. SnooSnooKachu Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 (edited) Ok, I wanted to get into the bios but my computer wouldn't even post. I figured I needed to clean up teh wire job in there anyway, so I just cracked it open and yanked everything out. I even removed the processor to check for flaws and reapply thermal compound and everything looked fine. There were no bubbled capacitors or anything, which is more than what I can say about my old mobo (r.i.p). After I shoved everything back in and plugged it in the computer booted up fine (except it did that auto detect that made the processor run slow). I hope that did it, but be on high alert for more questions on the forum. If anyone has a suggestion as to why this worked, please let me know. UPDATE: My computer locked up and is continuing the same crap. I tried some a few tests to try to diagnose this thing. I yanked out all of the ram and some of the time the motherboard would make the annoying beeping when I start the computer that signifies the lack of ram. I put the ram back in and unhooked the video card and it made a beep every time I tried to start it. I unhooked everything except the video card and ram and it would post every once in a while. Most of the time it would freeze before or in the middle of posting. When it does post, all of my ram passes the ram test I have my motherboard do, so I don't think it can be that.
