For those interested, these are the idle / full load wattage usage from the following build (also the rig in my sig). Full load was Orthos + 3DMark Vantage (graphics test 2, peak value over the whole test).

Build:

CPU: E4500 @ 2.8ghz

RAM: 4GB Mushkin XP2 DDR2-1066 @ 1020mhz

Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3R

Video Card: eVGA 8800GT @ Stock

Disk Drive: Lite-On DVD-RW

HDD: Seagate 500gb 7200rpm 7200.11

Case Fans: 4x 120mm

PSU: 450W Corsair

So ya, a 450W PSU (made by a decent company can sure do the job for something like this).

Opps ya forgot too list that, it's in my sig but I'll change the topic too :)

Sorry. didn't think to look there!

This takes me back to a posting on DIY-Street that caused quite a bit of debate.

Your graphics card is going to be the most power hungry component in your system and as far as I am concerned it is quite a powerful system that will enable you to play all the games available at the moment at medium if not high settings.

Why are the power supply manufacturers pushing 1kW+ units. Are they really needed?

I know my system is not the most powerful out there but the most I have ever recorded is 165W. Now fair enough I have not got the equipment to catch the peak inrush current at switch on but my Xclio 750W is overkill but I sleep sound in the knowledge that it's happy and not stressed.

....and 2KW units...why not just install a nuclear power station?

Cheers

Paul

1kW+ units are almost 100% pointless in my opinion, considering you can power pretty much anything there is out there right now on a good 750W supply.

With that 186W measurement, considering about 82-83% efficiency (which would seem typical for the Corsair), you're looking at ~150W DC.

Not even close to half what that PSU is capable of.
