Warby35 Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Can some one explain why Ultimate 64bit is twice the price of Home premium (at least at Scan) ? I have heard that Ultimate 64bit is the "gamers choice" is this true? all i can see is a poxy dreamscaape and some remote fax support, a cross between Buisness and Premium? Will i have any advantage using Ultimate 64 rather than Home Premium 64 when gamimg? The Media center does not interest me either Maybe see how it is then upgrade, has anone done that here? I will be parting with cash soon so your opinions would be helpfull P.S. The Microsoft comparison site is a bit vauge, I would prefer to hear it of an un-bias party Warby

Warby35 Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 hey Warby, I think this link will explain everything. Thanks but still no mention of extra performance for games with Ultimate? Is that true or just a myth? Warby
fire_storm Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Thanks but still no mention of extra performance for games with Ultimate? Is that true or just a myth? Warby There is no performance difference between all the different versions. Like the Ultimate version will not run games any faster then in home premium or any other version of vista. That whole thing that vista Ultimate is for the Ultimate gamer, PC user is just a marketing gimic. I personally think you should get the Home Premium version because it has a good number of features and is well priced compared to the other versions. Also in most cases it is just $10 dollars more then vista basic. When comparing Home Premium to Ultimate I see the differences like this. Ultimate has Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore and premium doesn't. I don't care for this feature and don't think its very useful. I personally like to do fresh clean installs of vista when something goes wrong. But this feature does save a lot of time that you would normally spend re-installing everything. Ultimate has Windows Fax and Scan and premium doesn't. I have vista business installed on my laptop and I find this feature to be useless unless you do a lot of faxing and scanning from your computer. On that chart it says premium doesn't have Remote Desktop Connection but I have premium installed on my computer and it shows that it is installed. Its maybe a different version installed on Ultimate but they both do the same thing more or less. I almost never use this feature and unless you use this feature its not worth paying double the price for it. Even if you did need to do remote connects there are many free programs online you can download that do the same job as vista Remote Desktop Connection. Ultimate has Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption and home premium doesn't. I find that this feature is a bit tricky to set up and use. I have no use for it because I don't keep critical confidential information or finical/personal information on my computer. I also think that if someone really wanted to know what was on the hard drive I don't think that BitLocker Drive Encryption would stop them might slow them down though. stueck9356 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 The business edition is the exact same thing as the ultimate edition, minus the ultimate 'extras' such as dreamscene, bitlocker, and the few extra games. If you want media center and all the bells and whistles without spending an extra few bucks on some made-in-ten-minutes programs, then business is the best. Dr_Frankenstein Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I am looking at purchasing a legit copy of Vista home premium but I can't decide between 32+64bit
Comp Dude2 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 It's got a big price tag, and if you add it to your sig, mostly likely a 'i'm a n00b' sticker. Home premium 64bit is the way to go.
stueck9356 Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Right now 64-bit has enough support behind it to at least get you by (plus a little bit more). The main thing about vista is that the more ram you give it, the happier it is, and 64-bit will run much better on 4gb of ram than 32-bit will. I have a 4x1GB set right now, and after tweaks, mods, and disabling everything under the sun, my vista x64 will idle right at 1gb. If you have 2GB of ram, it will tone down to around 600-700MB. Not a major hinder in performance, but with the price of ram today, its a plausible investment.

Just wanted to confirm that Home Premium indeed has Remote Desktop Connection, and the same as Ultimate does. I RDC to work computers fairly regularly, so that comment on the MS site made me wary. I can assure you I have full functionality when RDC'ing. I agree with mostly everyone else...HP is the way to go. And for the person who asked 64 vs 32, I say 64...the reasons have been discussed in a multitude of threads.
Pur3vil Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Can't vouch for the differences but will go YAY for x64 FTW
