Pureghetto Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Hello all. I bought a new heatsink for my P4P800E (Yes old. Yes meaning to replace one day) motherboard, but I am not sure how to remove the heatsink. I managed to find the manual but it only outlines how to install the heatsink, not remove. There's 4 screws (two visible in that image) that hold down the heatsink. I'm not sure how they attach. I'm not sure how or whether I can be walked through removing this. But here's hoping. PeterStoba Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) Put a screwdriver in the "notches" on the 4pins on the corners and turn the opposite way it says to install it Edited June 9, 2008 by PeterStoba
Pureghetto Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Put a screwdriver in the "notches" on the 4pins on the corners and turn the opposite way it says to install it And then just push up from the bottom. Got it done. Thanks a bunch!
PeterStoba Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Welcome, that system can be tricky at times
Pureghetto Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) New snag. Should there be a black, plastic square block with this? The only thing that was holding the heatsink seems to be attached to the heatsink itself. The manual refers to it as a retention guide. I remember when I bought the system that I had the people at the store put everything together. So I probably won't be able to get it back if it's a missing piece. Any idea if the store can slap one on or sell me one? xD Edited June 9, 2008 by Pureghetto
Kovoet Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Damn I thought I was the only left with that board as I got that one in my old rig which is being used as my firewall

Pureghetto Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Asus site shows its socket478, yet your images show a 775cooler xD hasn't broke in years I'm going to send it to the shop tomorrow. This is getting too tedious for me to handle. Thanks for the information though
romeo55 Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 That was what I was wondering... I saw this thread and I was like cool, a 478 board - I'm a gigantic expert on that socket. Yet when I opened up the pictures, it showed a 775 clipping mount. AFAIK, the two sockets had completely different heat sink hole configs. RHKCommander959 Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 no retention mechanism- your heatsink is held on by those 4 pins. dont worry about a retention mechanism. some mtoherboards have them, yours didnt
