Warby35 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Hi, I'm having problems and i may need to do a new install, my question is should i go with 64bit or stay with 32bit? What benifits would i see with 64bit other than more memory? will i see an improovment in gaming? How many people here at OCC use 64bit? jammin Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 will I see an improvement in gaming? Only really visually with some DX10 games if you a talking about Vista. Apparently some games do run slightly better under x64 as well. Since Vista SP1, there isn't so much performance difference for games when compared with XP. I'm using Vista x64. If you're doing a fresh build and plan on going with Vista, I say definitely go with 64. There aren't many programs that run in 64-bit, but those that do tend to perform better. Those that don't just install in 32-bit mode, and you'd never know the difference between them running in a 32-bit environment. The price for Vista is the same no matter what bits you get, so 64 is the clear choice for new builds, IMO.
kage Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 i havnt run 64 since i ran xp 64 about a year and a half ago, my problem is support was piss poor... i often couldn't find x64 drivers, or some things that games needed to install to work would just say they cant install on this OS, and i could never find a 64 version of the games... im betting since vista is out and x64 use is up that this has probably gotten better? Yes, support is pretty good now. Haven't had any issues myself. If you're doing a new build, you'd probably have to work pretty hard to find stuff that isn't supported. heh. As for your comment about applications that "cant install on this OS"...that was because 64-bit XP was actually based off of Windows Server 2003 kernel and not WinXP. Many applications, especially games, didn't support Windows Server, and thus wouldn't install on XP64. Vista64 doesn't have this problem. If an app is supported in Vista32, it's supported in Vista64. LoArmistead Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 If Windows Home Server supported it, I'd probably be using 64-bit Vista right now. They're supposed to come out with an update to WHS that lets the WHS console work with 64bit OS's. I might upgrade then. Farva Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Well if you game or use 64 bit apps then I'd say go for it IF you use vista. If you use XP then just stay with 32 bit. Yes, you can install both in either VM ware or on separate partitions I think.
Waco Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 There's no reason to not go 64 bit these days. I've actually had less trouble with drivers (even for older hardware) in 64 bit versus 32 bit Vista.
damian Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Yep 64bit is the .* except if you have 32Bit some drivers might not be compatible so download the appropriate drivers and install if needed. The only problem i have is that im not able to play manhunt but thats just because its not supported by vista :angry2:
