RHKCommander959 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 wanting to make a new build, its the e8400 vs q6600, but i know nehalem is around the corner. i do know it isnt socket compatible, integrated mem controller, and 4 cores with hyperthreading initial release, octo-core eventually. but when in 08'? otherwise how important is sse4 encoding? i play crysis never anymore... so not too many new games. i usually like multitasking more- and g0 wouldnt be hard to get 3.6. but a wolfy wouldnt be hard to get 4ghz maybe. thanks for any help --- side note: any good suggestion on cheap ram- ddr2 2x2gb kits. or maybe i should wait for nehalem and ddr3. but i am poorski and cant ever afford current gen stuff
Comp Dude2 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 i wouldnt wait, appearently they might even prevent overclocking, or make it really complicated. If you like multi-tasking then get a Q6600 and be happy

suburban36 Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 I had been looking to upgrade myself. I have an older Pentium D Duo Core which works pretty well on most things but when I hit certain points in crysis it hangs up. I got to looking at the specifications and some of the CPU's have recommended chip sets. The Q6700 (Not the Q6600) was specifically designed to chip set independent. (If I read the Intel site correctly) I have a P5KPL-VM motherboard which is a G31 chipset. I got it because I need a good working board and a computer I can play on also. (Plus I wanted an mATX system to exchange later and make into a portable rig) There are a listing of MB Chipset's which are "recommended" Not specifically mandatory for each of these CPU's (Do a comparison on the Intel Site) Even with the Old CPU I get almost 7000 scores on the 3DMark06 charts. Pretty good for an old design. But the Q6700 will be alot better I feel. If you are looking to Gaming only the E8400 will do just as well because most games don't fully utilize all 4 cores yet. Either way check the chipset to make certain of compatibility this way you will get the maximum out of it.

fire_storm Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I'd just build a new system because nehalem isn't suppose to be out for 6 more months and that doesn't included delays which are common with new products.
