Msi 8800gt 512mb Bsod In Coh

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I am new to this forum and I come here looking for some answers. To give you guys a little history of my PC, I will start by stating that I had an EVGA 8600gt that came with my setup when I purchased it from Microvelocity. I upgraded my gpu to an MSI 8800GT 512mb OC'ed to 660mhz on the core and 950 on the memory and everything worked okay. I uninstalled the old drivers and used driver cleaner to get rid of all the registries and also used CCleaner to make sure that nothing was conflicting in the registry before I installed the new drivers from nVidia. The version of the drivers that I installed are 175.16. All my games seem to run fine except Company of Heroes. I launch the game and in less than five minutes I get a BSOD......I took a picture of the BSOD so that you guys can perhaps see what the issue is with this card. DSC00269.jpg

THanks everyone in advance and I look forward to be a part of this community

checking google gave me pretty many hits. im no expert on this, however id suggest removing the OC, and then see if it still BSOD's. if it does, use the drivers that came with the 8600 (same drivers for all 8 series) and see if it works. just see if older driver versions give the same problems.

Okay I will see what the older drivers give me......the weird thing is that I have tried games like Crysis and COD4 at their max settings and played for extended periods of time without any problem which rules out the PSU being the culprit. I also ran Memtest from the floppy for 9 hours or about 11 passes without any errors. I have 4 sticks of G.Skill ram running on Windows Xp 32 bit.

Thanks for the advice

okay I did underclock the card to its stock speeds of 600mhz core, 900mhz mem, and 1500 shaders (previously 1650) and Company of Heroes still crashes giving me the BSOD......also Bioshock is giving me a problem too.....the game freezes after a few minutes of play say 5-10 minutes....I hear a repeating sound effect but the display is forzen. The card does not get any hotter than 48*C-50*C. So if it is an issue with drivers than which drivers do you guys recommend? Help!!!!

It could be heat, it could be due to your CPU overclock. Do you know if your rig is 24hr stable? I would suggest running everything at stock settings and if the issue persists then I would look to new drivers.

You can also try running games with the case open to see if it is heat. Temp readings via software are rarely accurate.

I used to have all kinds of trouble with my overclocks and BF2, I finally resorted to running on stock speeds and just dealing with it.

Hey thanks for the input......here is what I have done so far. I kept the 1.275 volts and took the cpu to its original speed of 2.4GHz.......still the same problem......the card is not heating up, neither is the CPU since its cooled by a Zalman 9500 and my idle temps hover around 22-24*C and never go higher than 34*C (these temps for the CPU and GPU are with the case side taken off)....as for my video card that thing idles at 42*C with the fan at 33% default speed but before launching any game I bump the speed to 100% and it stays around 48*C after gaming since it also uses a Zalman cooler stock from factory. Also...I took out the 8800GT and put back in my 8600GT and did another clean sweep of the drivers and installed the 175.16 Forceware drivers and this card did the same thing too and gave me BSOD with the same error as stated above......it had never done this before. I went back and unintalled all nForce and Nvidia drivers that I have on my system deleted all folders used Driver Cleaner to erase all kinds of registries related to the nForce and Nvidia software. I installed all of these drivers again and didnt yield any better results. Now I know that my 8600GT was running fine for the last 6 months I have had it for and all of a sudden it has also started to give the same problem as a brand spaking new MSI 8800GT.....I dont think its a problem with hardware. As for my system stability I have ran Prime95 for 16+ hours at 3.00GHz @ 1.275 volts. Also ran memtest+ for 11 passes to make sure there were no errors.....everything checked out. I am at lost as to where the problem lies  Please keeps the help coming I am willing to try anything you have to suggest to get my PC to start playing games again

Normally as a last resort, I would suggest reformatting and starting fresh. Of course when you do that you will want to remove all of your overclocks and ensure that the system is stable at stock speeds.

Have you run Prime or Memtest recently? If not I would run through those again, at least 24 hours for both. If no issues there I would have to assume its a software issue somewhere. You could try using an older set of Video Drivers, if you know the number previous to 175.16.

Edit : By the way if you google "175.16 Driver gives BSODs" you will find you aren't alone. I would try and find an older set of drivers.

Well hopefully that will resolve your issues. Nothing worse than having a gaming rig that wont play games.
